You’re fine with a loaded gun inside of your vehicle. You cannot legally carry it outside of the vehicle.

The website “hand gun law.us” has some good and usually up to date info on Illinois and other states.  I intentionally put spaces in website info.

Ok. Thank you

Personally, I cut over at exit 4 in Paducah to Wycliff Mounds then hop over to I-55 North to St Louis. That way I'm in that communistic state as little as possible. The roads are better too.

And Illinois LEO's are not known for their intimate familiarity with the law as to transportation of firearms. I've heard some horror stories from friends with Illinois State Police about their troopers, and local sheriff departments as well. I agree with "avoid it" as much as possible.

During the last few years I had to travel in Illinois several times.  I also agree with the "avoid it" mentioned above as the best solution.  Since retirement I have no plan to enter Illinois again.

My understanding is that we have NO reciprocity and that in Illinois the Federal transportation guideline should be adhered to…inside or outside your vehicle. I travel to St. Louis for work occasionally and play it safe an the KY/IL border, stop, grab a coffee, refuel, pee and unload and lock up pistol in lockable case OTHER than glove box (non-reciprocity protocol.). I then reload and holster up in MO once I cross over from Illifornaia. MY understanding of the laws and playing it conservatively safe. NOT sure Illinois sees car as part of castle like we do in TN.

Traveling with Firearms: Rules for Illinois Residents Versus Visitors | Joliet Weapons Charges Defense Lawyer | Law Office of Jack L Zaremba (zarembalawoffice.com)

The law as stated above closely resembles the "permitless carry" situation in TN before the recent July permitless carry law.

In car, can't carry it outside the car.  Little more complicated if you hang out in IL overnite.

It is wise to print it off the IL. State Police website  and leave in auto for the IL. LEO that do not know this newer law.
