Mini 14 Barrel Length

I have been reading some about shortening the barrel on a ranch rifle. Apparently it will take some of the "whip" out and reduce harmonics making the gun more accurate. I also noticed that the newest version "tactical" Mini barrel is a couple inches shorter. If I were to have it cut down, crowned and threaded who might I get to do that kind of work?

Anybody have any feed back on the results?

Not to be smart but I would check with a gun smith in your area. Not sure if it would be worth it because most of the comments about a Mini-14's accuracy has to do with the light barrel and it getting hot after multiple shots. A thought might be to have a harmonic dampener attached to the muzzle like Ruger has on the target models.

I have the stainless steel mini-14 (without the heavy barrel) and it is pretty accurate. Sorry, but I don't have any figures to quote, once the weather warms up I will shoot is more.

I was in CCA last week and they had some Mini-14's with what looked like a 16" barrel. They had a black synthetic stock and I think they were marked NRA. I'm not sure of the price though.

Having have to had to use the darn things for the last 18 years at work, all I can say is that.. nice emergancy truck rifle.. but as for serious shooting.. naw.. they don't get it. As much experience that I have had with them, in my opinion.. they are worse design I have ever seen in a rifle that was pushed towards law enforcement, only reason so many are used in my field.. they sold them on the cheap and I mean cheap.
