I don't know if your rights were violated, but I find it puzzling that a "LEO" would go through so much trouble for a hunch. Why would he pick your gun out of all the guns for sale? Most people do not show their serial # when they post a weapon, so I don't see how he thought this might indicate a stolen weapon. Maybe police work is different on my side of the state..........................

Ask a professional, usually the initial consultation is at no charge. If he or she strongly feel your rights were violated, they'll take your case on a contigency basis. Win-win.

The only 'rational" explanation I could come up with is if this particular cop either had your model gun stolen from himself or someone else. He might be checking all the local sales of that particular model. Otherwise it still all sounds VERY fishy to me.

IMO, if you supplied the serial number as the detective said, then it is consentual regardless of whether he identified himself as a LEO. It would be the same as throwing out your trash, and the LEO digging through it.
