Need Mosin Nagant Help

I've used the medium Pachmayr slip on recoil pad on a dozen Mosins. Aside from mitigating recoil they lengthen the stock to where you don't get banged in the face by your thumb on the pistol grip. I've used the same pad on Mausers and K-31's as well, always with good results.

The amount you shoot at a session can also depend on whether you shoot offhand or off the bench, with the bench giving you more of a beating than offhand. Generally I've found the Mosin with 147 grain ammo imparts much less felt recoil than a Mauser with its 192 grain 8mm load, or a K-31 with its 173 grain load. The mosin is just a nice shooting, gracefully pointing rifle.

I first shot my mosin 91/30 expecting ridiculous recoil. It wasnt bad at all. I mean, it was really not bad at all, easy shooter i thought. Ive got about 600 rnds of the czech surplus and about 200 of the Yugo. Then another 100 of something i have no clue where its from. I usually put about 30-40 rounds through it anytime i take it out. The only thing that wears me out is holding that heavy SOB up. If you rest it on something you will be able to shoot as long as you please.

My first deer was with a Springfield '03 when I was 12, so the whole sore shoulder stuff is a little above my head until we get to the 3 digit calibres that start with 4 or above.

I have pulled the trigger on a 30-378 and 3.5 inch turkey loads with no issue. The Mosin's are not in their league but a person new to the rifle and round should be fairly warned they are NOT a .270 or .243. I guess I would put them in the league with 300 Win Mags.

I think most of it is failure to shoulder the arm properly. At least I think that's the reason for the complaints.

I find the Mosin a comfortable rifle to shoot, as I do the .300 WM, .264 WM and about up to the .375... I would put it equal to a 30.06 or .303.

At about .416 that quits being comfortable, up from there there is a reason they only have 2 barrels...

I think its simpler than that. Most of us shoot them stock, as is, and that metal butt plate is a lot tougher on the shoulder than these nice factory applied recoil pads on everything out there.

I've never used recoil pads. Though I did once use a USGI surplus granade launcher stock boot, but the gun came to me that way...

Not really, I only shot 40 rounds and 40 rounds though my AK.

I wouldn't mind having y'all out to shoot, but I don't have much of a place, yet. I'm doing some fencing down in the pasture right now (well, before it go so wet. Had to stop until it dries up...) but once I get that done I'm going to lay out a proper range in the other half of the field. As is right now, I can get out to 150 yards or so. Once the fence is done, I'm planning to level out the other half and hopefully extend it on out to 500 yards or so. Once I get that done, we can talk about a 'North of 40' shoot.

As for the Mosin, they aren't horrible. Not quite as easy to shoot as a .223 or 7.62x39, but I'd much rather shoot my M44 than my single shot, 3 pound 3.5" chamber 12 gauge.
