Need Mosin Nagant Help

Ok, I have 3 Mosin Hex 91/30's in front of me, and I'm trying to figure out which one (yes, just one) to keep. I've tried looking up the different marking and such, but am still a little confused.

They all appear to be in about the same condition, and I'm not really sure any of the markings really matter. Just thought I'd check to see. All have matching numbers.

The first one has markings like the picture below, except the date on mine is 1924. On the top of the receiver, there appears to be a Soviet Crest (somewhat faded) with a diamond below it. It also has a Ukrainian depot/refurbishment mark on the stock, like the picture below.

The second one looks similar to the picture below, except the date on the one in front of me is 1934. I think there were a couple other stamps on it, but they are very hard to make out.

The third one looks similar to the picture below, except the date on the one in front of me is 1933. I think there were a couple other stamps on it, but they are very hard to make out. The rear site (numbers/lines) and part of the serial number are filled with orange. There also appears to be a faded star, with the date 1933 stamped on the stock, like the picture below. The sling slots on this one have screws in them. Maybe Pre-WWII? The other Mosin's do not have the screws.

That's about all I know. Anyone have any input?

Thanks in advance.

Well, you've got one Izhevsk and two Tulas. I believe people prefer the Izhevsk because they are a bit rarer, but not by much. Or is it the other way around?

Contestant #3 sounds like the most original. The stock may be original or at least correct for that year with dated stock cartouche and screwed sling slot escutcheons. I might go with that one.

I know you've already been here: http://7.62x54r.net/ and there is alot of info.

Tula's in general are rarer.

None of them will ever make you rich selling it down the road. If you use them as shooters I would keep the one with the best bore.

The '23 is an ex-dragoon if that matters to you.

Are these all "as new" refurbished rifles?

I have no idea what dragoon is, so I'm not sure that matters. All are in what appears to be very good condition. Because of the condition, I can only assume they have been refurbished.

Putting it kinda simply, a dragoon is an M91 that is M91/30 length but has M91 style front and rear sights. A "pre-M91/30" M91/30, if you will.

Dragoon: http://7.62x54r.net/MosinID/MosinM91D.htm

M91/30: http://7.62x54r.net/MosinID/MosinM9130S.htm

More to it than that, if you want to dig:

http://7.62x54r.net/MosinID/MosinRef01.htm

All 3 have the same front sights. Post and globe. The rear sights appear the same, but the "dragoon" is attached to the barrel by a slighlty different method.

Keep the one that means the most to you for your particular purpose. That is:

If you want history, keep the Dragoon.

If you want a shooter with a modicum of collectors value later on, keep the one that shows the least amount of refurbishment and the best bore.

If you want strictly a shooter, follow the other gent's advice and keep the one with the best bore regardless of anything else.

Yea, that's where I got the Yugo stuff from. It was a little more expensive than the Czech stuff, but cheaper than whatever else it was they had.

On average, how many rounds do most people shoot during a trip to the range? I haven't had the pleasure of shooting a Mosin before, but some folks claim that it has a pretty decent thimp to it. Does that keep most from shooting it a whole lot at one time?

No seriously people complain about the recoil, but they need to meet my 12yr old 110lb boy that loves to put 20rds through one in a session:tough:. I'm a proud papa:D

The Yugo is heavy ball I think, so should provide a thump. Mosins are prone to sticky bolt with some ammo, the Yugo stuff is some of the best out there with regard to extracting easier than the rest.

I've probably put 150 rounds or so through a battery of Mosin-Nagants in a session, but it's been a few years. Now I'll take 4 or 5 new-to-me MNs to the range and put maybe 15 rounds through each just to heat up the barrel for ease of cleaning. But mind you, that 60-75 rounds is over a few hours, and is light ball. You may be young enough that the heavy ball won't be an issue, but it can be with older bones and cold weather, believe me.

Just to be clear, the Izhevsk was an ex-dragoon, not a dragoon. Were it a dragoon, the choice would have been real easy.

How many you shoot depends on your manly man status! They are not .22s but they aren't 3.5 inch Magnum Turkey loads either.

I have shot all 20 of an unwrapped "bag" of the Brown Bear and knew it when I was done but other than some bruising, it ain't nothing you can't handle. I would class it a 6 or 7 out of 10 with the SOCOM you shot being a 4/5.

If I can ever find who makes that recoil pad that perfectly matches the Mosin butt stock I'm buying it! Slip on's don't fit it so I have only shot my first one bare nekkid. I got another one that is itching to shoot but can't find the time. I have my youngest in Hunter's Safety this week and we shoot on Saturday but I don't think they want us bringing any private weapons for afterwards:(

We need 56Ford to tell us when to come shoot Mosin's. That or Bronker needs to Pony up and tell me when to get over his way.

You raaaaang?

RW, me and Jcochran88 are definitely ready. Here's my dilemma...turkey season / church commitments / out-of-town / turkeys. I realistically don't have a free weekend until mid-April. Unless you want to come to Dickson and hunt thunderchickens with me and shoot that afternoon. No joke, I have 600 yd range capability in my back pasture. Say when!!! I have already put 6 or 7 rounds through mine. 6-7/10??? Bring your Man-Card with you when you come...:tough:

Sveltna needs some loving!!!

Yeah I'll hunt birds with ya. I'll even take first watch on being the caller since your making the offer. I have my youngest in Hunters Saftey this week so he can go and he is wicked with his 20! Let's plan this thing into action!

Yes Mosin Nagant, or Mona...is feeling neglected as well...along with Oprah (the evil black thing) and my Croatian Princesses...

I shall be in touch.

April 4 and 11 are looking fairly decent. I'll get with Cochran.

I'll book them days as BUSY as soon as you give the word. If you can work them both in we can trade places as well, one in DC and one in WC ! My treat!

it doesn't require a man-card to shoot a mosin..believe me. Just proper technique. If my wife can shoot an 8mm mauser all day then I'm pretty sure you guys can do 100 rounds with an old mosin. :D

then again...she refuses to shoot my m44...:drama:

The 91/30s aren't awful to shoot, and like TC said, there are definitely ways of shooting that reduce felt recoil. I have an M44 and usually go through 60-80 rounds at a time when shooting it, mostly because I have a limited supply and won't bring but that much with me. I'd probably go through 200 or more if I would let myself bring that many to the range! Something about that nice big boom and watching the impact of those bullets on bowling pins and golf balls is SSOOOOO satisfying! I have both heavy and light ball, and to be honest, I don't even pay attention to what's in the gun most of the time.
