.38 cal semi auto??

Is there such a thing? A coworker said he wanted one, asked me if I knewanything about it. I've not heard of any .38 cal semi .... You?

Yea there is a .38 super. A lot of guys who shoot compitions use it because of the power factor rules. There are quite a few 1911's chambered in it now, espically Colts.

The Smith & Wesson Model 52, it was designed to shoot a 38 spl wadcutter round. It was aimed towards Bullseye shooters.

Actually, the .38 Super is based on a slightly older cartridge, the .38 Colt Auto....a.k.a. '.38 Rimless Smokeless'. I had a 1902 Colt Auto pistol in that caliber. Fun gun...I now REALLY regret that I sold it.

The .38 Super came along later...I THINK in 1929 or thereabouts. While there are no new guns chambered in .38 Auto, guns chambered in .38 Super ARE in fact still being made. As someone stated, they tend to be popular with competition shooters......

Back in the day, the .38 Super was HIGHLY regarded among lawmen, with several lawmen stating that it 'dropped gangsters reliably'. Ballistically, it fired a bullet of 125grs. of so (FMJ) at around 1240 at it's hottest.

My personal 9mm carry load in my Glock 17 is a 125gr. JHP+P at 1250 f.p.s. (Corbon), and one of the reasons that I chose this load was that it was similar to the .38 Super ballistically. I'm confident that it will perform reliably, should I have to face down any gangsters...

There are .38, 38 super, a slew of metric named 38's, the S&W 52 (and a few custom & target 1911's) in 38spl, Coonan made a 357, I'm sure I'm forgetting some.

Other than the 38super I'd avoid the 38's; ammo is hard enough to find for a 38 super.

I'd venture that the vast majority of .38 Super shooters are reloaders

Yeah, most 38 super shooters are reloaders. We came up with a box of factory at the shop, and saved it for a guy we knew would want it. He was so excited that we had it. He reloads for his and carries it everyday.

Colt also made a 1911 for that purpose, it had a 5 rd. mag for .38 spl wadcutters. They were fine pistols, I shot one that belonged to friend years ago, I have not seen one in ages, but they are out there.
