what is a breech lock pistol?......

Typical breech locked pistols are most of the pocket pistols like the Kel-Tecs etc. Basically the barrel is locked into place until the pressure subsides when a round is fired.

Yeah, I'm not real clear on the difference either but I do know that the breech lock design makes for a lighter gun somehow and thats why its favored in pocket pistols.

yeah thats why i was wondering.Iv'e been looking at some subcompact autos and they most all are "breech lock" design

Ones that have a barrel that moves when extracting the round is breach locked, on a blow back action the barrel does not move. Just a basic definition.

In a blowback design, the weight of the slide and strength of the recoil spring are all that oppose the rearward motion of the cartridge casing at firing. In a breech lock (or 'delayed blowback') the barrel is mechanically locked to the breechface for a few milliseconds after ignition, allowing pressures to fall to a lower level before the slide opens. This allows the slide to be lighter, and the recoil spring to be weaker. Thus, lighter weight. Easier to manually function. Typically slightly higher muzzle velocities. A somewhat tamer recoil.

This is usually accomplished by some variation of JMB's swinging link, allowing the barrel to tilt and unlock as the slide moves to the rear.
