Never even heard of a gar.

I can remember the last day I could say that. I fought him for several minutes, then nearly :usa: my pants, while my father laughed. He was about 5lbs I caught it close to Cuba Landing. At 14/15 years old, it scared the bejeezuz out of me:D

I never fished much, and haven't in a long time. But I remember gar to be a lot of fun to catch.

But I never knew they could get that big, I don't think I want to go back in the water now.

I would rather shoot it with my bowfishing equipment. I wonder how thick the armor on that dude is. I have seen a good Muzzy tip bounce off of 20" fish before.

That thing looks like it is from the age of the dinosaur! I've heard of gar but I had no idea that they grew to that size.

That's pretty much true, ancient species.

And it tastes like chicken, the chopped and processed kind.

mcnuggets???

McGarlets.

I've caught a few little 2-3 foot skinny ones in my youth, and had a hefty 6 footer get off near the boat after a long fight (he was foul hooked).

I've never tried to eat one, but have been told they aren't bad. Very bony like carp. Guy told me once he cut them into steaks and smoked them, like some do northern pike.

The guys that grapple hook for spoonbills below the dams get big ones that way sometimes.

When I was growing up, I've seen gar in South Chicamauga Creek that would go maybe 4 to 5 feet long, but nothing like that monster. I thought those in South Chick were huge.
