Why does Kimber do this????

I own a Kimber Pro Carry II and decided I wanted tritium night sights installed on it. I ordered my Meprolight sights from Brownell's. When they arrived I brought the pistol to my local gun shop to have them installed. I dropped it off on a Saturday and when my girlfriend went to pick it up Wednesday there was a problem. The gunsmith was unable to get the original sights removed from the slide. In fact he told me on the phone (I was at work) that he broke his sight adjustment tool while trying to remove the sights. He called Kimber and they said that they recommend for the slide to be shipped to them for installation of the sights. He didn't charge me anything and said this was the third Kimber he has had this problem with.

What the :stare:????? So now instead of having it done in two or three days it will take who knows how long to get it done and will cost me 4 times the money.

Why would you dovetail a slide and have the original sights so tight as to not allow removal? They might as well be part of the slide in that case.

I am just a lil bit irritated about this whole thing.

If you ever buy a Kimber make sure it has the sights that you want on them :P

Your gunsmith hasn't done enough work on Kimbers. I have changed the sights several times on them, including mine. They use locktite under the sights, you have to heat them up a little and tap them with a brass punch to get them started, then they move just fine. Several makers do this with thier sights.

Thanks for the information I will be sure to pass it along. My slide is already on its way to Kimber so I will just have to wait for it to get back

Don't be mad at Kimber, be mad at your Smith. I managed to change them out myself with a home made sight press and a punch. If he couldn't figure that out, he shouldn't be working on sights in the first place.

When I read your post I questioned the "smith" also. Then when you said that had this problem before "this was the third Kimber". Before I'm done with the second one... I'm asking myself is there something that I'm missing here?

Kimbers are fine guns,

Enjoy,

Find a competent gunsmith.

FWIW: They require very little in the way of force and no heat to remove the sights. Just got to know where to apply the force and which tool to use (and it isn't a "sight pusher".)
