Well I'll post it here.

I have someone looking for advice. He's plugged his 50 amp RV into a welder outlet. The outlet reads 110 from leg 1 to neutral, 110 from leg 2 to neutral. He's been plugged in for 6 months and now the surge protector shows open neutral.
What's happened?

Could be any one of several things.  Bad connection at the outlet, bad extension cord, etc.  If your friend isn't comfortable diagnosing open neutral circuit problems, it's best to call an electrician out.  BTW, open neutrals can cause some severe problems if high current is being used, and sometimes will only show up when the current increases.  If your friend only recently started using heat in the RV, that's an indicator that the neutral may have had a problem all along, but only now the current is high enough to show up with the surge protector.  It's not something to play around with,. this is a problem that can start fires with 50 amp services ...

Very good advice here, open neutral will cause all kinds of head aches.

As No_One stated above it could be a lot of things, but if it was working and now its not my guess would be a bad or melted connection to do wire or plug problems. In addition to the possibility of fire, with an open neutral 120V appliances can get too much voltage and be destroyed.

On the RV forums, open neutrals on power towers at campgrounds seem to be a common problem.

Not a friend, someone asking for help on a RV face book group. I gave up trying to help, he would post one night asking for help then delete his thread at the end of the night. The 4th night he let it slip, they removed the neutral wire from the welder plug, not really knowing how the RV was wired. Now the 50 amp plug doesn't have a neutral, using the ground as a neutral.

That will do it, in terms of causing the types of problems reported ...
