RIP Charley Pride

Another great one gone.

Country music legend Charley Pride, who amassed more than 50 top-10 hits between 1967 and 1987, and won several Grammy Awards, has died. He was 86.

The cause was complications from COVID-19, his publicist said in a statement.

Country music's first Black superstar's biggest songs included “Kiss an Angel Good Mornin’,” and “Mountain of Love,” and 29 of his 52 top-10 hits rose to No. 1. He won multiple Country Music Awards. And in 1993, he was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry, although he maintained that he’d had an open invitation there since his first performance in 1967.

Damn! I hate to hear that. 😟 I was growing up in the 60s when he first made it big. Loved his music!

And from the damned Covid too! 🤬

As a young soldier in the early 70s, I went to the PX, bought a cassette player and the only three country music tapes they had. Conway & Loretta, Marty Robbins and Charley Pride. Man, I wore those tapes out!

I met Charley Pride once as a kid in a Golden Corral in Anniston, Alabama. I was over there with my grandfather, and he was there having lunch.

No one seemed to bother him - and truthfully I don’t know that anyone noticed him. But on my way out we passed his table and I said, “hello, Mr. Pride.” He smiled and proceeded to have a lengthy conversation with a kid who probably wasn’t more than 10 or 11.

He wasn’t too far from the height of his fame, but he wasn’t too big or important to take the time to talk to a kid.

He’s had a fan in me ever since.

Mr. Pride was a genuine talent and one of the true country music greats.

My father was a big fan. I always appreciated his music.

RIP and Thank you Mr. Pride.

My dad was a fan as well. Being the time frame it was, and in an area that still had a few less "woke" people, Dad did have some colorful ways of expressing how he liked Charlie. lol

Did you guys know that Steelharp (RIP Buddy) worked with Charlie several times. Played harmonica and steel guitar on several tracks. I apologize for not remembering which ones Michael told me once.

I remember Dad having an 8 track of Charlie that he had in his old truck. Played it quite a bit. Back in those days I wasn't much of a country fan, but I did listen and sort of liked it. lol

Well...age has given me a different outlook. lol Before Dad passed on, I became quite a country fan.

Well, Charlie, May you Rest In Peace. And join in with Michael in the Heavenly Band.

Rest in Peace Sir. You will be missed but you are now with Mikie and a bunch of other great people in the music business that have went before you.

50 years ago I gave my sweetie a copy of "All I have to offer you is Me," sung by Charlie Pride. We celebrated our 50 back in Feb of this year.
