Should the flag on a S&W lock show?

I posted this on another forum, but thought I would post it here for discussion also.

This is my factory new Model 610-3. When I was cleaning and inspecting it after picking it up, I locked and unlocked the lock to make sure it was fully disengaged. The lock flag shows when unlocked. It may have been that way before me doing that and I didn’t notice it. Should the flag be visible like this when unlocked?

This is only my second S&W with a lock, my other a 617, I don’t think has this flag. At least I don’t see one, I didn’t get the key to try it.

Also, when locking the hammer back it has a very notable resistance just prior to the hammer locking back. None of my other S&W revolvers do that??

That doesn’t look right, especially if is causing a drag on the hammer.

I only have one with the lock but have never locked it.  For one I don’t have they key and another I wouldn’t even if I did.

You might have to send it back or just remove the thing.

I have the 610-3 just like yours and the flag on mine looks exactly like yours-just sticks up that little bit.

I think in the picture if you look close you can see the corner of the flag.

There’s a guy on the Smith and Wesson forum who sells a plug to replace the lock. If I ever had a reason to own such a revolver, I would definitely remove the lock.

I have done a little research into the like it or not lock-seems some of the members on the S&W forums actually say to leave the lock alone.

Seems the only evidence of malfunctions all came from severe recoiling aluminum framed big bores in the 3 inch barreled variety's.
