Gun stock refinishing?

Good afternoon.

I am looking for someone who can refinish a rifle stock. 

It has a couple little dings in it. Would like to get them out if possible, and a new satin or oil finish?

Please let me know.

Do it yourself. A damp rag on the stock and a hot clothes iron on top of it will pull out most dents and dings. Some sandpaper and a bottle of tru-oil is about all you need. To get a satin finish, rub with fine steel wool or better than that, pumice dust.

I just have never finished a stock.

I just refinished a walnut M70 stock. 

46 days start to finish. I can completely understand why folks charge hundreds for this......

It's actually not difficult, just time consuming. Even with Tru-oil, you really need to wait 24hrs between coats, sand down between every coat. You need to wet sand the first few applications to fill the grain & after 15 or so coats/days, you need to leave it 10-14 days before you can polish the gloss back to a nice satin sheen. The stock I just posted was 28 coats & is literally as smooth as glass now, but it took a lot of work. 

It took a lot longer, because my initial batch of finishing oil was contaminated & after 26 applications, it would no longer cure. I had to strip it all & start from scratch. I was heartbroken.....

Ditto to all; especially the Tru-Oil.  Put it on in very thin layers; I like to use superfine steel wool between each coat.

The maroon colored Scotch-brite pads work great too and don't leave those fine bits of steel wool.

Either don’t sand it or recut it with a checkering tool.

Hint...use a sanding block and not just a piece of sandpaper in your hand. I’ll bet YouTube has some informative videos on refinishing a stock.

Good idea on the YouTube thing. 

I am going to give it a try. I ordered a tru-oil kit.

I have a stock that someone did a really nice repair to a crack. I think I will try it first.

I would also like to shorten it by 1/2“ to 3/4”?

You are SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO right!  Take it very slow, light coats of Tru-Oil, and don't rush.

Well I am working on it.

The iron and wet cloth worked. Who knew?

I have 4 coats on it now. It looks good except for 1 spot? But it is getting smaller each coat.

We shall see.

I put the last coat of finish on this morning?

6 coats now.

From what I read I now have to wait 7+ days for this to dry and then use the sheen conditioner?

Go to Lowe’s and get a bag of pumice dust. Pour some in your hand and start rubbing the stock. It will remove the gloss without scratching and leave a pleasant sheen.

Edit: or doesn’t look like Lowe’s has it. 0000 brass wool would probably work. Fine steel wool will work if you can’t find anything else. I just don’t like the little whiskers it leaves behind.

Best I can do with what I have.

This side was super dented.

My iPad makes it look grainy.

If I can knock some sheen down I will call it

My first. I know you all are much better at this than I am, but it’s not too bad for a first timer?

I am just amazed that the dents are gone. The damp cloth and iron trick was great.

My Kimber 84M in 338 Federal looks like it has an oil finish that is like a satin finish? Would that be correct?

Who says you can’t teach an old man something new?
