Flashlight Mount for HD Shotgun - Mossberg 500

I am looking for a way to mount a flashlight on my Mossberg 500. It isn't tac'd out with rails or anything and is the basic 500 field gun with an 18" barrel that I put on for HD duty. I have seen mounts that can clamp around the barrel and then hold a Surefire or other equivalent light. Are there any good, reasonably priced mounts out there that someone could recommend?

It's out of stock, but worth a look.

After googling "shotgun flashlight clamp," it appears that the Tac-Star and the ATI are about the most economical ones out there. Let us know how it works if you get one.

I know this doesn't fit into your criteria, but because they are so awesome, I thought I'd share them. My boss has one on his 870, and it seems quite nice. On one side of the forend, there is a built-in on/off switch, and the other side has a built-in pressure switch. Not cheap, though

The ones already mentioned are good, if you're looking for the cheaper route. There are many companies that make/sell similar products.

I just stumbled across that before you posted...of course now I am looking at pistol grip stocks and thinking about turning my 500 into a dedicated HD gun and picking up something new for field use. :)

I currently have a Streamlight that I throw on my M&P sometimes and it looks like they make mounts for the 500...if I got the mount and another Streamlight, I'm already sitting at $150...might as well get the Surefire, right? Geez, this gun stuff is addicting...

That is the clamp style you're probably talking about. I use this to mount a Streamlight TLR-1 LED light on my Mossberg SPX and have had no problems out of it. Cheap and effective.

I bought this for my Mossy 500 and the optional cheekrest:

and the light mount that's easily attached to the bottom of the grip:

I put a $20 Brinkman light from Academy Sports on it:

. . . and 50+ rounds later no problems. It lights up nicely and the mount is very firm. It doesn't shift after several rounds like it did with some other solutions I tried.

I actually stuck one of these: http://www.brownells.com/aspx/NS/store/ProductDetail.aspx?p=26773&title=REMINGTON%20870%20PICATINNY%20RAIL%20HANDGUARD on my 870, and it is working out perfectly (same idea, different execution).

On the other hand, the Viking Tactics flashlight holder I have cannot seem to keep a firm grip when faced against even low-recoil slugs. Not terribly encouraging... and, yes, I cranked the bejesus out of the screws.

Here is the mount I ended up getting off eBay to try for $4. I would have rather mounted it to the magazine tube, but the OD was a bit too big for this mount, which could easily be remedied by adding some longer bolts. For now the mount fits perfectly on the barrel and snugs down very tight. Seems to hold my Streamlight on there securely and the switch is easily accessible while holding the forend. Obviously not the most glamorous choice, but hopefully I can take it to the range sometime to see how it handles the recoil.

Is that a metal mount? If so, that seems like it could be hell on the barrel's finish. That's why I liked the polymer mount from Streamlight (and others).

Yes it is...I did not notice any marks after removing it after being clamped down. Will re-evaluate condition after a couple loads are fired to see if it is moving around any. This gun isn't a show piece, so I'm not too terribly worried about the finish anyways.
