Looking for books on a couple of subjects.

I was wondering if anyone knew of any good books on...

gardening(ones that give tips on things like which vegetable/fruits grow during what times of the year and in what states)

canning(ones with canning recipes)

making your own soap,shampoo and tooth paste from natural matter(no extra chemicals you need to purchase)

The Foxfire series might have that. I need to pick up a set of them myself as the ones I have looked at previously were other folks sets.

This is THE answer:

for canning, The Ball Blue Book. about $3-4 at Walmart with the canning supplies. EVERYTHING you need to know. and dont try to cut corners from the book's instructions; you cant. it is only about 50 pages but there is no better book for canning.

for gardening, Square Foot Gardening is what you want. look for it at a used book store or library sale. Encyclopedia of Country Living by Carla Emery is great too, but you'll never find it used and its $30+. SFG is excellent for what to do when re gardening. he writes for Mass, but it is close to TN in timing. and no, you dont have to square ft garden to use its info.

for making soap, etc, you'll need Emery's book or the early Foxfires (tho they wont have as much as EOCL). even if you get EOCL, i'd still get SFG.

Nice link. And I was going to suggest square foot gardening and the firefox series. Currently I'm looking for a good book on home cheese making, when I find it I'll let you guys know.

National Center for Home Food Preservation has some decent info.

I downloaded and printed this for reference.

Square Foot Gardening is a good suggestion as well.

I am going to also say if you have never read them the Foxfire books are full of great stuff. The Ball canning guide is also a good book for canning.
