Bought 75-5/4 X 8' a month ago @ Lowes for $4.89 Ea, went to pick up 2 yesterday & they were $11.87 Ea.

Lumber man said it was only going to get worse, glad I really didn't need them.

supply and demand.  Home construction and DIY shot through the roof during quarantine.  Overall demand for lumber has exceeded the ability for production to keep up.  Some home builders are reporting a 30% jump in overall house cost vs the original estimate due to lumber prices.  Just think you were planning to spend $300k building a house and in 3 months time the cost jumps to almost $400k.

The 75 pieces of 5/4 cost me approx $383.00 with 5% discount & 10% tax.

The 75 pieces if bought yesterday would have been approx $901.00 with same discount & tax. I doubt they had 75 pieces.

Bad as ammo prices, maybe worse...

Yeah, and I'm in the middle of dealing with Metro Nashville Codes on a building permit. It's as bad or worse than lumber prices.😠

This thread was the final bit of convincing we needed that now is not the right time to build. We sold our house in April and decided not to buy at the beginning of a global pandemic. We've been renting a little house near downtown Knoxville. I think we will try to find house that needs some work and fix it up. Home prices are absolutely ridiculous right now.

Find out how the repos are disposed of in your area. Not being in a hurry will usually pay dividends.

That's what happens when people are locked in their homes, they need bigger spaces and the women find projects for their husbands to get them out of their hair!!

I just finished a roof over my back deck. Almost all of the lumber came from a man that lives a few miles from my home and has a sawmill. Rough cut and to real dimensions. His 2x4’s 6’s etc measure 2”x 4” and 6”.  They were almost half the price of the crap they sell at Lowes. Country living does have advantages.
