Swedish K-31 Opinions?

My Mosin should be here any day now, and I started looking at the Swiss K-31, too. I did notice that the ammo may be a little more difficult to come by, plus it's a bit more pricy.

Other than that, I don't know much about them. Anyone have any personal experience with them?

  • Very accurate
  • Straight pull action
  • aftermarket support increasing, mounts & diopters
  • Kicks like a mule--my worst recoiling rifle, moreso than #5 Enfield or any Mosin IMO

Some folks think the recoil is nothing, but for whatever reason, the K-31 hits me hard.

My elderly neighbor has two. They were one of her prior husbands. He was swiss. One of the two has a medal of some sort hanging with it on the wall. I would probably figure he was a marksman of some type

I own one and a K98 that I have been working on for a couple of years. Hopefully when my little Girl starts school I will finish them up. Along with riding my motorcycle.

I have a lot of friends that own K31's. They are at the top of the mil-surplus list.

I paid about 120.00 for mine. They are going up and starting to get scarce. Mine had the name, service number and address of the last soldier to have it under the butt plate. Swiss soldiers keep their weapons at home with them to include a basic load. Even their Reserve members keep their weapons.

From what I've heard about them, they're possibly just about the most accurate mil-surp you can get.

TDR, Wideners (Johnson City) has 'em, and ammo, last I checked.

The action is very smooth, very fast to cycle. Triggers are uniformly outstanding. Match capable right off the rack. Ejection is very positive - tosses the case straight up. Wood generally needs a bit of TLC around the butt - usually 'beaver-chewed' (as a result of soldiers kicking the frozen-to-the-ground buttstock loose). Blue is usually worn a bit on the left rear of the action (due to method of carry, tucked into the alpine pack). Front sight is windage-adjustible, not too difficult to do. Diopter sights or a scope mount are definitely worth the money, the rifle is capable of taking full advantage of a telescope.

About the only 'tuning' needed is to slightly loosen the barrel bands so that the barrel free floats, and adjusting the tightness of the tang screw.

Top choice for folks competing (winning) in surplus rifle shoots.

Commercial ammo is available, and has the advantage of being reloadable, whereas the milsurp ammo, while match-quality, is difficult to reload. Bullet is .308 diameter, so lots' of very good choices available for reloading.

If you can make it to the shoot at my place in April, I'll set out a couple of K-31's for you to try.

Thanks for the info, guys.

Samco and Classic Arms are the only two places I've been able to locate them. I'm sure I haven't looked everywhere, but did check all the places I can think of.

It looks like all the K-31's in better condition have been spoken for. Classic Arms claims to have some in nice condition, but without matching numbers. Not all that important, I guess.

Thanks again for all the input.

IMO the sights are really bad on the K31 (but they're easy to scope).

Allan's Armory used to sell a lot of K31s. He sells fewer of them now because he usually can't get the quality he wants, but he still has them sometimes. He describes each rifle individually and (accurately). He's closed till March due to surgery, but it's worth checking his site occasionally of you want a nice K31.

I have a friend with one of these. It is a beautiful rifle, that functions flawlessly. Very accurate as well. I didn' t notice that the kick was any worse than the other Mil-Surp bolt guns I've shot. I'd love to find a good deal on one myself. The Ammo is getting pricey, but what Ammo isn't?
