.357 bullets for 9mm reloads?

Recommended Posts

Guys, I have recently come across a large volume of 125gr .357 diameter bullets that are not that much longer overall than the length of some 125gr .356 diameter bullets I am running normally in 9mm.  Has anyone ever tried .357 in 9mm reloads? I've read on the internet that it's fine as long as the length of the bullet isn't too long as to mess with your COL. I've blown up one gun too many doing dumb things so I'm gonna refer to the great minds of TGO for advice.

People shoot 147 gr bullets in 9mm so yeah the 357 dia 125 gr bullets should interchange between 38 spl,357 mag,9mm,38 auto,,some of the lighter bullets, 95 gr can also be used in all of the above plus the 380 acp . Now I am referring to cast powder coated lead boolits that I use, not some solid brass bullets. As always start on the low end and work your way up with powder charges.

Back in 86 I took a couple hundred .357 125 JHP and ran them though my bullet sizer. .356 they shot ok, but harder to push through sizer than lead obliviously.

9mm is .355 inches, .38/.357 is well, .357.

Use that knowledge however you like but I would not be pushing .357 jacketed bullets through a 9mm.  Then again, I’m not desperate.

I agree. If I was thinking about it though, I would slug the barrel first and see what size it truly was.

before you try it, slug the bore of your 9mm.  Many 9mms have a groove diameter closer to .357 or even .358 than to .355.  I have shot jacketed .357 dia. 125 gr. bullets in a 9mm that had a groove diameter of .358.  The critical thing to watch is to make sure seating depth of the .357 bullet is the same as seating depth of the 125 gr. 9mm bullet given in your manual.  Since you'll be taper crimping the location of the crimping groove is not critical.
