Turkey hunting..How to?

Recommended Posts

Thanks to Magiccarpet Rides I have a new chicken gun.

Stoeger P 350. Still looking for anyone with links to a Ghost sight system for this one (its a Benelli Nova look alike)

Been giving my wife fits practicing with the new Primos Double with "Sonic Dome". The darn thing is great...run out and get one! I may not even use a pan call this year.

The other tools pictured were thrown in the picture as I had not taken any photos of them since their adoptions (well the light colored Mosin has been here since about a year)

Uh, I ruined my sons juvenile hunt this morning by waking up at 0730 with daylight streaming in!! I just recently switched over to using my new cell phone as my alarm and it lets you select the days you want a repeated alarm to go off. Well, who wants the alarm going off on the weekends when you don't have to get up right? I forgot to check the settings to allow it to go off on Sat or Sun so we slept in. I made it up to him by taking him shooting anyway. We blasted away with his 20, my 12 and he shot it for the first time (bird shot lightweights). We also plugged away with some 38 special and 45. Good time for all. I got to shoot my brothers 10 gauge semi with 3 inch mags and have to say.....my 12 with 3.5 turkey's was harder on recoil. Gotta love a semi for taking up some of that recoil. Would like to invest in a nice 10 gauge someday though after shooting his.

Anyway, alarms are set properly, we are set again so headed to bed in a few. Hope to post a pic of a nice tom after we eat him tomorrow night!

Went out and did some scouting this morning and I have to admit once I heard 2 or 3 Toms gobbling I was hooked.

Wait till you get one in there so close you can hear him spit'n and drum'n, that is what will really hook ya. When they are that close the deal is almost done!

At least you all got to go shoot. Good luck and show us some pics!

Well, we are back already. I took him to what I figured would be a sweet spot as I had seen turkey roost just above this spot and we could hear them fly down.

Nothing! Heard one gobble about 4 times on a hill across the valley to our north and then he shut up. Walked the entire ridge and couldn't get anything to answer so we watched a few squirrels (nice big fox squirrels) and then headed in. Maybe for once the active season will fall in line with regular hunting schedule. That or it's all over already and they are on the nest. Didn't even see any out feeding in the fields where they usually are.

I hope I'm able to call one in that close, being my first year hunting anything I have a lot to learn about calling.

I've got a blind and two decoys so maybe that will help.

I'm using the blind because I'm going to try it with a bow.

Just curious how many arrows most bow hunters carry with them when turkey hunting or hunting in general.

I was planning on bringing 3.

I know you'll hopefully only need one but I thought I would ask.

3 to 6. When I still had my "training wheels bow" :P I had a 3 arrow quiver, but I was going to buy a 4 arrow quiver then I decided to try the longbow and now carry 6.

I practice on the way to work or any time I’m in the car alone. My wife put a stop to that in the house.

Sounds familiar...

I had a quiver that held 6 arrows when I went bow hunting in deer season, but I only carrried four since you probably won't shoot more than that lol. Anyway, good luck turkey hunting everyone! I've been dying to go hunting the 4 years I've been stuck here at college! Good thing I get my BS in Civil Engineering this May! If you have never been turkey hunting before, don't expect a lot like in deer hunting. From my experience, 9 times out of 10 you will fail at harvesting one. It is very much harder than deer hunting in my opinion. Usually when you lure them into bow or shotgun range, if you haven't pulled the trigger by then, they will usually pick you out and know something is wrong and walk back the way they came. Also, always call a turkey uphill and never downhill if you are in hilly terrain. They will never come to your calling going downhill due to the fact they can't get away from danger running uphill as fast like they could running downhill and takeoff to fly away from you if you called them uphill. Something I learned the hard way. I hope you can call a gobbler in without those pesky hens following him, or you will be in big trouble with all of those eyes watching you lol. Good luck everyone and happy hunting! Be safe!

I have found that when it rains it is easier to hunt them. They like to hang around on the edge of feilds and if you find them in the woods you can sneak a lot quieter in the wet leaves.
