Anyone recognize this tree bark?

It is a stretch here and a bad pic, but does anyone recognize what type of tree this is?

Dad sent me a pic showing his new walking stick and said he had only seen a few of this type tree.

Came from family land east of Knoxville. While I can't say native for sure, the land has not had a lot of planting done on it, so I assume.

Does look a lot like sweet gum branches.  I assumed it was a sampling he cut and not a branch. I could be wrong though. Do Sweet gum saplings do that on the trunk?

Nope or if any gum balls were around. Did say this was a sapling though. 

I am settling on sweet gum myself after looking around.

I still think its sweet gum, but could be winged elm.  Sweet gum is far more prevalent so just playing the odds.

I mean more prevalent across the region not necessarily on his property.  Sweet gum saplings don't always present with wings that big, winged elm typically has more of a two-sided wing versus all around, but what I've learned from 15 years as  professional forester that trees don't always look like they're supposed to and can vary from site to site.  Leaves would make it easy, until then we'll just have to go with a photo that was taken with what looks like a potato.

Yeah Dad's photo skills leave a lot to be desired. I get lots of videos of their mutt dog riding the skate board belonging to the kids across the street.

I am more interested in what this is than he is. So I doubt I will get any more pics or anything. Think he really just made it to cover up how bad his foot is doing.

haha, I understand how it goes.  Both sweet gum and winged elm grow in wet bottomland areas so could in all reality be either one.

Sorry to hijack, but does anyone know this tree. It has nice flowers on it. I've never seen one like it. Probably 30 feet tall.

My wife the naturalist also says catalpa tree.

It definitely appears to be that. Not sure which one. I've never heard of these.

The catalpa worms make excellent catfish bait also. They can eat the leaves off the tree and make them almost bare. Always our ritual of gathering the catalpa worms for our catfishing trip to Danville fishing off the rocks on the railroad levy.
