Help identify an S&W Model 10

I’m looking for information on my Model 10. With something that’s been made since 1957 (and seems have roots back to 1899) I’m aware it has been through a few revisions, but I’m not able to identify it. The serial starts with 6D.

Check that serial again.

Or is it D6xxxxx ?

Front sight indicates older than 1980 which was when 6D SN started. 

Inside the crane, swingarm there should be a stamping mod.10 - X . A 6D SN should be 10-7 or 10-8

Correct.  If you swing out the cylinder and look behind where the rod was, just in front of the cylinder and below the barrel, you should see 10-8.

It was made in 1980 according to The Standard Catalog...4th Ed.

Thanks all. I’m satisfied in it being a model 10-7 1980. The ctg confused me because of things I’d found in searching before. All is well then. I’m stripping and blueing the gun. The finish has some chips and it’s not going anywhere so i can water color it if i want. Lol

It should handle +p just fine.  These guns were made in an area when .38 special meant something, not the anemic ammo most manufacturers produce now. +p+, I don't know but why push it?

There’s only been about a gazillion of them made in the past 120 years.

They say pachmayr on them. 
 

the barrel on this is coned. Thick base, skinny towards the tip. That along with the sights are different from a 1980 model i see on the net so it’s still weird to me, but if the serial says 1980, i guess thats what we go with. All the ones i see that are newer have a barrel that is equal thickness tip to base and ramped sights. Also, the logo is on the left of the new ones and the right of the old ones. Mine is on the right.

Those should be Presentation style Pachmayr grips. Should be aftermarket for that one. 

They made these in that tapered barrel and a heavy barrel both at the same time. 

The logo was moved off the sideplate on the right to the left side on the frame in about 1981. 

These sights come between the earlier 1/2 moon and the later ramp I believe. I dont right off see the dates of the changes.

thats the number on bottom of the handle frame though. There is another number that keeps appearing on the inside of the wheel hinge, gun body, and frame handle that is 65,xxx which would be 1956. I’m confuzzled. Lol

Some numbers reassembly numbers used by the factory. 

There are several places the serial is stamped.  Look on the back of the extractor star.

edit: the smith revolver gurus seem to think the gun is what it should be so I’m still content with it being a 1979 (because of low number after D) 10-7 4”

The serial number is on the butt. Yours is one of the last models with a pinned barrel. It is a high quality gun, and the fact that there are millions of them keeps their value below what it should be. It never ceases to amaze me how accurate these old service revolvers are.

It will shoot more +p ammo than the average Joe could ever afford to feed it.
