Rude people!

Ok so here is my rant. I had to deliver a 15 minute presentation about campus security at our monthly new hire orientation at the hospital today.

I go in give them our crime stats (down 14% from 08), tell them all the new things we are working on like more intelligent camera systems, new training, hiring more officers, etc. I'm joking around trying to get them to do anything other than what they were doing.

During my 15 minutes one girl applied lip gloss, one did her nails, one lady stared off into space, and everything in between. So I attempt to add a little shock value and tell them what we deal with, what we do, what can happen if you're not aware, etc. Nothing.

Now, before the jokes start let me say this, I have delivered speeches and presentations to ALOT more than just 12 people before. I may not be the most exciting individual to ever live, but I'm not Ben Stein either. I just found it rude and irritating and they did it to the person who spoke before me as well. If you don't care about what my team can do for you while you are being strangled by an angry psychiatric patient fine, but at least have the common courtesy to look towards the front of the room for 15 minutes. Damn.

Ok rant over lol

You should have started picturing them nakkkid, told them that you were doing that, then critique them on what they need to improve..

You could have went all Mall ninja on their butts, and started telling wild stories of this one time....

that would have been awesome

I was half tempted to tell them about all the violent psychs we've had lately. We've been averaging an all out brawl at least a couple times a week. Busy for a hospital anyway.

That's allright they'll have something happen one day and they'll need to call us and they won't be able to remember what to do lol

I can sympathize. I see this kind of thing frequently. Part of my job is to do Tech Support type training for a large computer company. I teach job skills that the students are required to use daily. I still get people who sleep through classes, stare off into space, or are just plain sullen about having to be there. It amazes me how just plaion rude people have become.

It's strange because it's not just an age thing either. There was a 40 somthing in the class that just stared at her desk the whole time.

Selective Amnesia......good strategy.

Here it is:

Cindy (the nails girls): Help we have a patient trowing poo, and swinging chairs.

Punisher: I think I covered that in my presentation, but you wouldn't know that because you were doing your nails.

Cindy: c'mon man I need help

Punisher: Cindy your nails look great. Try not to get poo under them.

Cindy: Are You Series?

Punisher: Oh yeah, you might be able to get the poo out from underneath them, but the smell will linger.

Rudeness knows no bounds, economic, race, geographic or any other.

I have given presentations to other professionals, and I have to attend lectures regularly for licensure.

Reading newspapers, texting on cellphones, using laptops, etc etc... Eventually you get used to it I suppose.

But, it has made me a better listener when I am in the audience, I have been on the speaker side of things, and when I am listening I am attentive and nod/make eye contact, take notes etc during someone's lecture/presentation.... although, I don't in some instances, like when they want 'audience participation'... ummm, just 'cause I am paying attention, doesn't mean I want to be called on like it's elementary school again.

I've done that during some IT Training sessions I had to give at a hospital my company does the IT staffing for. It's usually worth a chuckle when the two nurses in the back of the room who were sound asleep not paying attention to your lecture on the new computerized charting system jump up from the sound of a popper going off at their feet.

if your presentation was as boring as this thread its a wonder you did not have to wake them up when it was over.

Punisher, I know it's because I just read damned Gecko45 thing, but damned......did you tell them they should strap on multiple SAPI plates to counteract the 338 Lapua rounds that the may receive......hehe:p:) JK bro.....I hate stupid, rude people.

My high school band director had an effective way of dealing with people who weren't paying attention. He kept a supply of drum sticks up at the front of the room, and if you started zoning out, you were apt to have one of those sticks zip by your head.

I also teach in a hospital type environment. My observations, Nurses only want to be nurses and generally don't give a rats rump about systems. CNA's generally fall into two categories, those that have computer skills and those those VCRs still are blinking 12:00.

I love them all and there is no way I would do their jobs and they are really and truly angels, mostly.

Training consists of 45 mins - 10 min break another 45 mins - 10 min break and then a final 45 mins to 1 hr. Also I get them involved throughout the training by drawing them into it. I also learn from them this way. I ALWAYS give the rolling eyes or head nodders especial attention. Its amazing how if you inadvertently embarrass someone how they all of a sudden start paying attention.

You're excused, because you do have really great nails and that takes alot of work to get them to look that feminine.
