Removing grips

Last night I was trying to take the grips off my Beretta 92 so to switch the magazine release button to the other side. Each side has two screws holding the grips in and I was able to get three of them out, but the fourth won't come out and it looks like it's gotten stripped. It's a hex head screw and I was using a 5/64 hex drill bit to remove them. It took out the first three fine, but with that fourth one the bit just spins around inside and the screw doesn't move. What is the best way to fix this? Do I need to take it to an armorer or could I find something at a hardware store? And it looks like I need to replace that screw that's gotten stripped--anyone know where I can get new ones?

If it is truly stripped in the frame you'll need to take it to a gunsmith.

If i'm reading that correctly, you are saying that the bit spins inside the screw, aka, stripped out correct?

If that's the case, you can fix this yourself. Go down to Sears and pic up a bolt Extractor bit or set. Then it's self explanatory. The tool grips what's left of the bolt and turns it out. You have to get a new screw after that, but that's easy as well.

Can I assume that you weren’t using a drill bit, but were using a 5/64†Allen wrench/ hex key?

Is the allen wrench spinning in the hex in the screw head or is the whole screw spinning and not coming out?

If that is the case (wrench spinning in hex) do you have a metric allen wrench to try?

Midway has hex screws in stock, I picked up a set for the 92 I have in layaway. :screwy:

If I understand the prob correctly:

Use a Dremel to carefully cut a slit across the head of the screw, then use a flat head screwdriver to unscrew it.

+1 for the screw extractor. I've used 'em on 1911 grip screws, seems like Springfield screws are "soft" and I like to change grips alot.

Order the screws form Midway, get a extractor and on you're on your way

Also, FWIW.. I've always been able to find the screws locally. I generally use Stainless Steel allen head screws. The SiG is the only one i've not used those on.
