1911 question

Is it necessary to remove the firing pin and retainer before removing the extractor?

My EMP occasionally leaves a tired case in the chamber. I figure the ejector needs a bit more tension.

Hi Greg,

If it's a normal 1911, I believe you have to remove the firing pin and the stop to remove the extractor. Here is a detailed explanation.

The extractor is slotted for the retainer to hold it in place. The easy way to check the extractor is to remove the slide from the frame, slide a fired case under the extractor groove and shake it a few times. The case will fall out if there is not enough bow in the extractor.

I have discovered that most everything on an AR is designed to launch upon disassembly. I wouldn’t expect a pistol to be much different.

If its a series 80 you can depress the plunger on the underside of the slide then push the firing pin in and release the plunger to hold the firing pin, then slide the stop out of the way. If it a series 70 its going to try to fly.

Well, that was a bit of a challenge for an all thumbs guy like myself. That extractor really likes being home. I think I got it though.

This thread may have saved me from trading off a gun I really, really like.

And it now runs like a Swiss watch! I love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just bent the extractor and put it back together. No parts necessary.

Recently broke the extractor in my R1 that I have had since they came out.  Don't have a specific round count, but have used it in a couple of 4 day classes plus a lot of practice rounds.  Easy to replace with an Ed Brown part.  Should be good for several thousand more rounds,

Just in case y'all don't already know.........  

The 1911 is a controlled feed system.  Its designed for the case rim to slide up under the extractor when feeding from the magazine. NEVER drop a round into the chamber and close the slide on it.  Doing so can bend or break the extractor. 

This is why some companies went to a spring loaded external extractor.

Both of my EMP's had way to much extractor tension right from the factory-seems like Springfield just installs the extractor and if FTE is experienced then adjust.

Between Kimber and Springfield Armory a person never knows-either too loose or too tight.

Rock Island can make them work right out of the box.

I think what is happening here is that the manufacturers and their assemblers look at a 1911 like an AR.  They simply assemble em and assume they will work... It takes time to adjust the old internal extractors... They simply roll the dice n wait on the complaints.  Sigh...
