Turkey Season

Recommended Posts

Well guys at 67killed my first turkey, only hunted turkeys a couple times in my life. Funny thing I was out back stacking firewood and heard him gobble about 100 yards down in a bottom. I broke and ran and put on some camo grabbed my 870, seat and eased out front of barn into the woods about 60 yards. Sit down cut at him and he waited 5 minutes and gobbled, he wouldn't answer me but about every 4 or 5 minutes he would gobble. About 20 yards to my 2 o'clock came a lone hen and she messed around for 5 minutes hunting her sister I guess. I putted to her as she was walking away, she turned looked and eased off. Gobbler gobbled in same place so after 5 minutes I decided to move half way to him, I stood up and was getting my seat and he gobbled 50 yards down the hill. Now it was getting interesting. I sat down got gun on my monopod, flipped safety off and every few minutes would putt at him. Since this was my first turkey and not videoing I didn't waste much time when he came in, at 25 yards with a 2 3/4" #6 reload I put him down, he was flopping pretty good and I shot him again with a 3" #5, made him a jellyhead. Spurs were 3/4" with a 9 1/2" thick beard. Didn't have a scale, but a nice turkey. 2 or 3 weeks before season I saw 3 longbeards 40 yards from my window at computer desk, so I knew we had a few. Sorry for the long post. I ain't saying I am hooked, but if I had went fishing I wouldn't of got him. Shot him at 1:05P.M.

Had a bird gobbling like crazy at noon today.  He finally came into the field but hung up at about 75-80 yards.  He paced back and forth gobbling but would not come one step closer.  He finally strolled off.  Stupid bird.

Sounds like a pretty smart bird to me. 😆

Seems like all I can call in is jakes or coyotes. Called in a coyote this evening about 5:00 but, couldn't get a shot. Never heard any gobbling.

Danged David that is 2 coyotes, maybe after turkey season we may need to set up and thin out your coyote herd!!

I haven't heard one in a week or more. Yesterday while going to nursery to get fruit trees saw 3 or 4 turkeys, 1 nice gobbler about 1:30. I read that turkeys have sort of evolved that if there are a lot of turkeys sometimes the younger gobblers won't gobble because they may have been in fights with the boss hog of the woods and just be quiet. May be true?

Anybody been hearing any lately? Not much going on in my area. Went Yesterday morning and didnt hear nothing. Gonna give it a go tomorrow.

lots of gobbling yesterday morning near Vonore.  Couldn't get one to come in, so we went after the most vocal one only to have a coyote come running up and bust it off.

I'm not sure if its evolved as much as if you get your ass kicked for shouting, you learn pretty quick to keep quite.  Toms will certainly keep quite if a more dominant bird is around but they could still come looking.  I've had birds come in and never make a peep.  Even big birds sometimes just stay quiet
