No one gonna point out how fast the Republicans have gone from crying about socialism to embracing the same ideas those candidates have suggested? Trump wants to send us all $1,000 checks and wants a nearly $1T stimulus package....

We're looking at $2T deficits soon.

Not quite the same ideas.  Trump is pushing a one-time payment (possibly more), basically an individual bailout in an unprecedented scenario.  Yang wants a permanent allowance from gov-daddy.  They both smell, but one out-stinks the other one.

Will a $1000 check stimulate the economy? Of course not, because people aren’t spending except what they have to. Many Americans pay checks have been cut off without warning. However, You should be glad that we have a President that is taking the economic impact on the working class seriously. If you think that is socialism; you don’t understand.

This may soon be the economic doom and gloom you have preached to us for years.

No one has to accept the check.

;) Ain't that the truth.

And its like .40S&W ammo, I'll pick it up from those that don't want it.

They're doing what politicians do best. Throwing money at the problem.

But consider how many people in this country live paycheck to paycheck. Many of them are now out of work. Many of them will be low on groceries soon. If, and that's a big IF these folks take that money and use it to care for their families, this will be a good thing. Honestly, I can see crime going way up in the near future with people doing bad things to support their families.  This isn't just a health crisis  Its a major economic crisis.  Never underestimate the power of desperation.

Its perplexing seeing people in some of my social media circles get so excited about getting $1000 of their own money back, and realizing that most of them have given little to no thought to how the Govt can keep on going after giving back all this money that was theoretically budgeted for something necessary. I would have just preferred to keep the $1000 to begin with.

The airlines need a bailout?  Sure, critical infrastructure, essential for wartime scenarios to move troops...of course we'll make sure they're operational.  But management and shareholders shouldn't get anything resembling a reward out of it.  We should squeeze them through strings attached just as hard as they've squeezed travelers with baggage fees, preferred seating fees, shrinking seat sizes, overbooking, having to transfer planes at LaGuardia and Atlanta...all while spending 96% of their free cash flow on stock buybacks over the last decade.  Maybe I'm wrong here, but I'm punitive when business tries to socialize loss when gains were quite privatized.

Oh, on the COVID-19 front, my work from home adventure starts tomorrow...would have been sooner, but I was part of the rearguard getting others set up for remote work.  Guess it's time to start eating some of this food I've been accumulating over the last few weeks.

I bet they love their 10 day waiting period....I wonder how many are not even aware of that law until they hand over their credit card.

I remember the waiting periods from many years ago.  I sometimes get impatient waiting for the TICS.  I had expected a UPIN to speed the process but my last purchase took about an hour.

You will see a spike in the numbers tomorrow as tens of thousands of test kits have gone out to community testing centers.

What's the turnaround time for test results?

Last I saw, 3-4 days.

I think that's just for the lab. Time from being tested to being notified of results is about a week.

And interestingly, I've heard several first and second hand reports of people under 70 being denied a test.

A website (link below) tracks testing by state. I checked all Southern states. There were only 5,000 test results total. About half of those were done in either Texas or Florida. For Tennessee, South Carolina, Georgia, and so on, there have been roughly 400 test results per state. Tennessee has only 403 results as this is posted 10:43AM March 18. As tests become available, we're going to see more positives. I think this is a good thing, not that more people are affected, but that the masses become more aware of the risks involved in going out in public.

If anyone wonders why there is such a rush to get cash directly into people's hands, this part of the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security COVID-19 update I get daily should clue you into the ripples our economy could get hit with if we don't do something.

US JOBS LOST A new poll found that nearly 1 in 5 of US workers have either lost their jobs or work reduced hours as a result of the COVID-19 epidemic in the United States. The poll—conducted by NPR, PBS News Hour, and Marist Poll—asked respondents a broad scope of questions, including perceptions of the President and state governments and their handling of the coronavirus response and the impact of the pandemic. In total, 18% of respondents have been fired or had their hours reduced due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Notably, this impact was greater in respondents earning less than $50,000 per year (25%) and those living in small cities or suburban areas (23%). The survey was conducted March 13-14, so it does not account for the spate of recent increases in social distancing across the country, including school closures, limiting restaurants to takeout or delivery, or the shelter in place order in the San Francisco Bay area.

OpenTable posted last night about the number of their restaurants that have already laid people off.

Food service is almost 12% of the economy.

I'd be curious as to whether anyone here has had hours affected/cut.

I suspect the next thing will be to get people on unemployment without a waiting period. But, I doubt they are prepared to handle that spike very well.

Not so many years ago if this happened and my salary was suddenly stopped; it would have been devastating. I feel blessed that other than my IRA taking a beating; my family is okay.

I support everything the President is doing to get money into the hands of those that need it. I hope Congress works with him. If there was ever a legitimate time and place to “throw money at it” or “throw money away” as some call it; helping the working class is it. Unfortunately, I suspect those that don’t need or deserve it will also get it.

My wife heads up the catering division of a Nashville area restaurant.  Caterings have been cancelling every day since last week.  Understandably so.  That is 6 to 8 people who aren't getting any hours at all.

In the last couple of years my wife has transitioned from a traditional college professor to online teaching, as well as, teaching fitness classes at various ymca’s and like places.

She teaches 3-4 classes a day for the Bellevue YMCA right. Ow and that has all disappeared. Luckily that money is nothing we need to survive, but she’s going crazy already.

I only post because the question was asked about those affected, I don’t need any sympathy. I have been lucky enough to be a regional VP for a healthcare company. I no longer live within my own region of management. I travel most weeks, so this has been a welcomed relief from the road warrior life.

I think I may have already seen something about that.
