I don't recall the requirement but I believe it is 3, 7, and 15 yds. That being said, each instructor/school can add on anything they think will help out. I have heard of some classes that required shooting at 25 yds.

The class my Dad and I took for his North Carolina CCP and my ME/NH CCP's through the Wake County Sheriff's Dept. was 3, 5, 7, and 10 yards. That seems to be the common trend here in Tennessee too.

According to the DOS curriculum it is 12 rnds. at the 3, 12 rnds. at the 7, 12 rnds. at the 15. The fourth set is 12 rnds. at the 25 or any lesser distance- Instructor's discretion. Since anything over 15-20 yds is getting into what most professionals would consider to be distances difficult to defend in a court of law and certainly wholey unrealistic (most gunfights will be at distances of 3-6 feet) We move our students back up into "reality" distance of 5 yds and less (6 rnds at the 5 and 6 rapid-fire rnds at the 2).

Use the six pistol shooting fundamentals and shoot center mass and you can not fail. Have fun with it.

Interesting and glad to see the info above, my wife was nervous. I had heard it was 10, 15 and 25. Typically we shoot 8 and 10 when we go to the range and she's got about an 8" group, so she'll be fine. This is why TGO is such a great resource.

Phantom6 is right...but I will say that after you get your permit you should practice at 25 yards at least some. (I like 50 yards too)

It makes you a better shot at the closer distances...aim small, miss small.

No, but we had to shoot backwards over shoulder using mirror.

They run a tough course at Coal Creek.

Is there a "standard" per se? Or is it up to the instructor?

Phantom6 said what the DoS requires:

According to the DOS curriculum it is 12 rnds. at the 3, 12 rnds. at the 7, 12 rnds. at the 15. The fourth set is 12 rnds. at the 25 or any lesser distance.

The intructors may add on to that but that is the minimum as required by the TN DoS.

I agree completely. Shooting from 25 yrds is stupid. If you want to practice some at that distance fine, but for tactical reasons or qual reasons that distance is absurd. If they are 25 yards away, unless they have a gun at you and you have absolutely no place to hide like in the middle of a field and they have a rifle on you, you arent going to defend yourself in court.

I watched this done recently. If these folsk were being shot at from that distance with the tme they took for each shot, a good shooter would have already laid them out. And of course most of the foks who ended up doing poorly by the end did so becuase of the 12 shots at 25. Until then most were doing pretty well.

Just took mine Saturday and we did 3, 7, 15, and anywhere you wanted as long as it's past the 3 (12 at each of course). I was a little nervous until i found out there were people in there who had never shot a handgun before. :)
