"...real f'ning Nato and real f'ning Cabelas"  I loved that line! I think that sums it up pretty well.

If you got a real "Need" for it...get one. If it's just to be a range toy, a "Want," you'll need deeper pockets for ammo than I've got.

Would I like to try one? Absolutely. Buy? Pretty sure that's a no for me.

@bduncan1231, I'm pretty sure they're not very similar, but did you ever look at the mags side by side?

Not the same at all.  Ruger on the left, FN/CMMG ProMag on the right

PROMAG = Please Remember Our Magazines Are Garbage

My son had a few and never got all the way through them without a failure. This was in 5.56 . Hopefully these are better.

LOL. The CMMG came with the ProMags.  We have a few FN mags for it 😁

Would love to see more guns in this caliber. I had a five seven but sold it because it felt to rinky  dink. Buttons were plastic, slide had a plastic cover. Did not feel worthy of the price point.

hoping the ruger has a more substantial feel than the five seven squirt gun.

in before it’s NOT plastic... it was just for effect.

For this gun to be something I would want; the round would have to be something I want. I don’t see anything interesting or special about the round. It’s a lot of velocity with little mass.

It’s claim to fame was defeating body armor. Shooting at people wearing body armor will probably be short lived. The things that make it good at defeating body armor; make it an undesirable in making your attacker unwilling or unable to fire his weapon at you.

While the above video shows that the .357 Mag is obviously more devastating on meat and fruit wrapped in cloth; I would bet the 40S&W or the 9mm would be also.

30 rounds is a lot. But then, so is 15 rounds of 40S&W or 17 rounds of 9MM.

Hey hey….I just bought a 45 Colt for a range toy. People want what they want. 🙃

The deadpan sarcastic comments are the best.

I can only imagine the rabid Five-Seven crowd thinks about some of these videos. But...Ft Hood....Ft Hood...

I bought a used FN 5.7 a few years ago and liked the low recoil and accuracy but sold it. I decided I would rather have 17 rounds of 9mm in my FNX 9 than 20 rounds of 5.7 in a real life self defense situation not to mention the cost of 9mm vs 5.7. I wouldn't rule out having another 5.7 sometime though. It was fun at the range.

I like the 5.7s speed but the cost of the round always stopped me from buying anything chambered in it.

Great video.

The Ruger is realistically priced. (As most Rugers are). The FN is overpriced. (As most FN's are). Game, set, and match Ruger.

I've had a 5.7 for a while and done my due diligence on ammo for it.

What I now is blue tip Fiocchi and Federal ball ammo are light loads and those rounds won't penetrate much soft armor. To me, they're just plinking ammo.

Example:

But a lot of the after-market stuff has the velocity to penetrate body armor.

Example:

Buffman on YouTube has tested a lot of 5.7 ammo out of the pistol:

That said, I love my Five-seveN and wouldn't hesitate to carry it for self defense with good ammo (no Federal ball nor Blue Tip Fiocchi).
