If I did this I would have to ensure no ammo was in the house...maybe for weeks...else she would use it on me. And my kids are old enough to know already.

My brother is 60 years old and still insists that there is a Santa and expects something under the tree on Christmas morning. You didn't mention if they were still believers or not.

Buy the gun you want, and drop it off at a friends house. A few days later they come by with the gun and say "Thanks for loaning me the gun, sorry I kept it so long." The wife will just think it's a gun you already had.
