Coyote in West Knox

Recommended Posts

My wife was on the front porch yesterday evening, around 6:30 saw a coyote trotting down the street.  We're currently living in a subdevelopment in West Knoxville off of Ebenezer. I was surprised, rascals are spreading I guess.

I see packs of them running around in neighborhoods at night. Upscale neighborhoods at that. We watched some take down a small deer several months back. Coyotes are off limits at night in Tennessee.

A pack of them were living in the wooded area behind the apartments on Holston Drive down from the Burlington library a few years back.

Within the city limits, straight shot to downtown.

I haven't seen any in my area of NW Blount County.

If you're hunting them, yes.

If you're eliminating a nuisance animal that's causing damage to property or endangering people, pets, or livestock, no.

I see them occasionally near an overgrown creek bottom that passes by several nice subdivisions.

They need to be actively harming animals or people when you shoot them. If they killed your chickens and three days later are walking across your yard at night without doing damage, you can't shoot. You need the permit. The game warden will come out and give you one. Just point out the dead chickens.

Talked to the TWRA officer that issues my permits. He said they don't actually issue permits for small game (Coyotes). They have to be actively harming your person or property for you to shoot them. He also said if you're having problems, call the local officer and something would be "worked out".
