To give you an idea of the cost of this just the Sambar Stag for the handles cost $160 before shipping. The custom leather/Caiman sheath was made by one of our own on the forum....1911alltheway.

The pros say Sambar Stag from India is the best. Harder, less brittle, less pith and the best color of all. I tend to believe it.

For years there was an export ban by India and the deer population was threatened due to...

Quote

The stag export ban is said to be to prevent the poaching caused by natives. The extreme poverty makes quite a lot of these poor guys to take a chance and earn a few cents by any possible way. It is easier to shoot a deer than search the forest for the antlers. They don't think for the tomorrow, they just see a few cents at the moment.
What I've read this is the OFFICIAL argument for the reasons of the ban.

With proper management the export ban has finally been lifted I'm told.

Makes sense and those qualities are one reason it is more expensive.

I looked them up. Looks like there is an introduced population on an island in FL

I understand. It is hard to fault a person trying to feed themselves and their family but once they are extinct there is no fixing it.

How many layers is the blade, and what pattern if it has a name.  Beauty of a knife.

512 layers.....I call it a random twist.

Grand Torino thanks again, I'm gonna have to get a display stand for this one. You and 1911alltheway really did a great job on this project, I'm sure glad you decided to make this one.

Have you considered video'ing some (or all) of your steps?

With all the artesian products and services (knife making, leatherwork, etc) you guys should post some video clips

I do this as a hobby...not a you tuber. I don't say this in a derogatory manner but recording takes equipment and time. I have little to none of both. I try to sell my knives at the best possible price and since I've never been big on taping/recording, photography anyway if I bought decent stuff the knife customer would pay for it. I'm trying to keep costs to a minimum and pass the savings on.

Received the knife today, and I have to say you and 1911alltheway out did yourselves on this one, It's ten times better looking than the pictures could show, the stag handle is amazing and feels great in the hand, the sheath is just unbelievable the camin alligator skin accents just set off the sheath. Thanks' again guys. I'll post some pics of all the blades you made me this weekend.
