Question for you Retired Guys

This doesn’t answer your specific question but may help you. My Edward Jones Agent gave me the name of a local Medicare Consultant, she is a private agent. I met with her because I wasn’t sure what I needed since my wife was still working and had health care. She looked at all my information and determined I didn’t need Part B as long as I was covered under my wife’s insurance. When my situation changes, I will contact her again to see what I need. I had no desire to become an expert on Medicare, so I needed some expert advice; too many ins and outs you need to know.

When the time comes, I’ll need to add part B, a supplemental, and possibly a drug plan. She had a lot of options depending on needs.

When I singed up I got a pamphlet at Wal-greens. It had a toll free no. that I called. The guy I talked to was very helpful and explained each plan. He even checked cost for each. Since I have several doctors I choose plan F and pay no copays or anything. It does cost more but I save money in the long run.

I bought a plan F from UnitedHealthcare. My wife bought a plan F from Farm Bureau. Hers was about 25% cheaper than mine. After 3 years both have paid every medical bill with absolutely no problems. We are both happy with our supplemental policies.

All I have is part A because I am forced to take it. At least I don't have to pay for it.

I could be wrong but I think everyone over 65 on Medicare has part A. I have it because I was required to sign-up even though I have health care. I don’t pay anything for it.

I went to a Farm Bureau meeting that explained it very well. They didn't put any pressure to buy anything from them. It was definitely worth the time it took. Check with Farm Bureau to see if they have any of those seminars coming up close to you. I took Part A as everyone 65 and over is required to do but it's free. I got Part B through United Healthcare after shopping around because my wife's former employer reimburses part of the premium as a retiree benefit. If you are working for or retired from a Tennessee government employer it's worth a call to check with POMCO https://www.umr.com/oss/cms/UMR/State_of_Tennessee/index.html. Some Tennessee state employees such as teachers get a partial reimbursement on their Part B premium through the state.

If you haven’t filed for retirement, you don’t have to take part A. In fact, you won’t get it unless you file for it.  Part A (HI) can cause some tax problems if you have it while working and  making contributions to a heath savings account in the same year.

Just something to keep in mind. I’d advise anyone in that situation to talk to a tax pro.
