Well they aren’t making anyone get them. If you don’t fly, or if you have a passport you don’t really need it.

It just pizzes me off that I was just in there, now I’ll have to go back, and I assume they will charge me again.

I never know when I might need to get on an airplane. I don’t always have my passport with me; I always have my DL with me.

Why not just get a passport card and throw it in the wallet?

I had the option to get both the book and the card when I got my passport, but because the card was limited; I didn’t see the need to spend the extra $30. I didn’t know they were going to do this “New ID” or I would have done that.

I fully understand them doing this, and really don’t have a problem with it. But when I was getting ready to renew my DL in April, they had all the information about what you had to bring for ID; I gathered all that up and took it. I did not notice it said July 1. I just think they should let us get it at no extra cost, and I hate sitting in there waiting at DMV and watching the most inefficient slowest government bureaucracy you will ever see in your life. Okay, maybe I’m exaggerating, maybe the Social Security Office is slower; but they are close.

So far, my experience with the SS office is far superior to my experiences dealing with the DMV or even just the local police department when trying to get CLEO signoff for NFA items.   Thank goodness I don't have to do that anymore.

I’m trying to give back the SSA thousands of dollars. I’ve been in the office twice, called several times, even wrote a letter with a check attached. Nothing….and no one there can help me. The local office said they can’t accept payment. The main office (phone) said they don’t know why the local office is telling me that, but when they tried to get a supervisor on the line, they came back and told me; they aren’t allowed to comment on what the local office says.

They held off on implementing the "gold star" so they could reap more revenue by doubling up on renewal fees.    I renewed my license earlier this year so I'm one of the group getting screwed as well.

No "doubling". If further out than renewal window, duplicate license charge applies (8 clams for D/M, 12 for CDL).

Logically, it would affect about the same number of folks no matter when it were initiated.

Seems like we are easing in to a National ID. If other States are doing it and they are all linked in a Data Base then thats what it is.

Starting out you will only need it for certain situations but just wait a few years and see.

Technically we are already there.  Drivers licences can be searched by any LEO no matter what state, and SSNs are also linked to your profile.  All these REAL Ids do is make sure you are a US citizen, or legally here, before receiving one.  Since a licence is optional, though essential, they are not forcing you to comply.  I do believe most states will keep a non-REAL Id option as well.  Now, if we could only have all states make it mandatory to have a REAL Id to vote, we'd be going somewhere.

I guess everyone knows that TSA is allowing illegal immigrants to fly without any ID. You only have to have ID to board a plane if you are a US citizen.

They have to have a Form I-862, the “Notice to Appear”.

But yes, we have to have all kind of ID to prove we aren’t a criminal. However, a documented criminal can fly on his criminal documentation.

Went Monday to apply for mine. Took 135 minutes wait to apply and 10minutes to complete, at Clarksville Tn.

Since my license was good till 2025 I had to apply for a duplicate license (Real ID), cost was $8.

Simple, need driver license, utility bill, SSN card and birth certificate. There are other forms of ID that can be used but that was what I used.

I don’t find that simple at all and have a fundamental issue with it.

Agreed so much.

Mine expires in January, so I may get one then, since I'll probably be forced to show all my stuff in person again.

Well I can see the time you will need one to purchase firearm's and related items for reloading.

Also for many other things.

Our government at work, either change it or get use to it folks.

There’s no changing it and I will get one because there’s really no option.

My concern is the haphazard use of SSN’s that were designed for one thing and one thing only.  It has now become the de facto ID for everything,  not only for getting a DL to opening a bank account , or getting a CC.  In this age of piss-poor security and identify  theft it’s just no longer acceptable.

BTW, all that information is contained in the two bar codes on the back of your license.  Be careful of who let scan it.

You would think the Mil/VA ID would work.........., but just beause it makes sense, doesn't mean it will fly (pun ). Haven't been on a commercial aircraft since '68, don't plan to.

Update, I looked this up, a military ID, or a valid passport is fine, also a gov. PIV ( Personal Identification Verification card ).
