KA-BAR and SMKW Visit

Recommended Posts

Last week I went to E. Tennessee and got to check-out Smokey Mountain Knife Works and Buds Guns.

SMKW was much larger than I expected. There had to be over 100 people working there! It was huge.

I had always wanted an Old School NAVY KA-BAR so I decided to pick one up while I was there. I also found that they have a “Big Brother” to the traditional KA-BAR; so I got it also.

It's been a long time since I've been there, but it is indeed an awesome place. Love the Ka-Bars, I've been meaning to pick one up basically just like the top one. The bottom one is...big!

I was in there on Memorial Day to see if they had received any more stock of Ruger Wranglers. Unfortunately, they had not. It certainly is a big place. They added some stuff to the bottom floor but I didn't have enough time look since I was on my way back home from Gatlinburg. Bud's is a place I've yet to visit.

I like Bud's;  have bought firearms and accessories, shoot there regularly, and the staff is pretty good.

Go here BEFORE you visit SMKW, otherwise you may be underwhelmed.

Bud's is a large gun store with competitive, if not great prices.

SMKW is a destination that happens to have a good selection of guns, ammo, and accessories. I've been in dozens of times over the years for ammo purchases only, I still enjoy looking around.

January was my first visit to SMKW.  It took several more trips ( and dollars ) to view the entire store.

DaveTN, what is your opinion of the metal quality of the K-Bars?  I'm feeling an itch.

Hard to beat 1095 Carbon steel, coated with a durable finish.  Ka-bars are built like tanks!

It’s 1095 Cro-Van, at 56-58 Rockwell. That is a proven steel (also known as Sharon Steel Co. 170-06 or 1095CV) at a hardness that should work well and retain an edge without being brittle. The blade is coated with an Epoxy Powder Coating so it won’t rust, for those that don’t take care of their blades.

I don’t traipse around in the woods much, but the Big Brother is the knife I would carry if I decided to do that.
