Older Dillon 650 help

Recommended Posts

Guys, I inherited an older Dillon 650 press when my brother passed away 3 years ago. Is there anyone around the Murfreesboro area that would be willing to help with this thing? I had it set up for 45acp but my rounds where weak and had unspent power. Also I need help with 223 as we have had feeding issues. I would be willing to pay someone that knows how to operate this thing to help me get started. I have so many supplies I hate to not use the thing. Thanks guys

If you are new to reloading I suggest a single stage press, reloads 1 case at a time. Have you read up on reloading? What powder and charge weight are you using in 45ACP? What is the OAL of the 223?

Winchester ball ammo "super target aa" I'm not sure about the charge as it's been a while since I fooled with it. However I set the charge about middle of the road on the load chart. Also I calibrated the bullet depth to near exact to spec.

45ACP, Powder( super target aa  is an old powder?) and weight(I found 1 listing and it was 9.3 grans).

I did find a lot of load data using Titegroup. I do not reload 45ACP, but do reload 44mag, 40 S&W, 45 Colt, 38, 357, 25ACP and use Titegroup in all and have very good results with the powder.

223 might be OAL, or a number of other things. Magazines, feed ramps, dirty rifle, bullet used.

So many variables in reloading, have you read up?

Hey, Its a Dillon..... just call Dillon, they will guide you over the phone with anything your not sure about in its operation.  CS on anything with a Dillon name on it is what the company built its reputation on.  After you talk to them, let us know how they treated you.

+1 You need to learn what's happening in each of the dies, what are the characteristics of each of the powders, bla bla bla. You need at least one commercial reloading manual and as many as you can get from the powder manufactures. The commercial ones are about $30 the manufacturers ones are free. Read a lot and ask a lot of questions. Remember, the only dumb question is the one you didn't ask.

There are a bunch of you tube video's on setting up and using a 650 if you can get past the ones doing the video's.

Also Dillon doesn't care of you are the original owner/purchaser I have an older 450 and they have helped me a few times and I even mentioned I was like the 3rd. owner at least...

take your time, be detail oriented and keep a notebook handy to record every little thing so you know what to do again or what didn't work so well..

Sorry you got the press the way you did, but I am sure you will have it up and running in no time.

I have several other powders to try. I was thinking there was something wrong with powder myself. I also wondered if I used too much case lube? Im gonna try a different powder. What do you guys suggest for 45acp? I have several other powders to try.

Power pistol and HP-38 is what I use mostly in 45 and 9mm. Recently started using Accurate No5 in 9mm also have not tried it in 45 yet. Also for 223 try some CFE223

I use Titegroup for 9mm, 40 and 45, among others.    It's fairly fast-burning and well-behaved.  In my experience, almost anything will work well in .45.

When I use medium-rate powder such as AA#5, the cases, especially in 9mm, are filled up more and tend to slop powder out as the shellplate rotates.

Ran some loads with the power pistol. Ran and shot great through glock 21. Went back and started running a large batch and my powder charge started changing. Got a few tenths high, then it started barely dumping powder at all. I have the old powder charger that has the plastic bar. Not sure what would cause this as I've never had that happen before?

6 grains of #5 doesn't fly out of my cases while indexing my 550B.

Check your powder measure power pistol meters very well usually  within a 10th of a grain. Make sure your adjustment  knob is locked down good.

It is just a black plastic turn knob. How do you lock it down? Can improper adjustment of the fail safe bar cause this?

Should be  lock ring caller on it

Yes there is a white bushing and a spring with a wing nut adjustment.
