What is up with the insane prices on the mosins lately? I mean, $400+ for one seams crazy. Is it because the countless millions of surplus ones are drying up or embargo stuff?

I dunno. I have a rifle and a carbine, along with a LOT of ammo. It may be about time to make some room in my safe. I'm not real impressed with them overall.

I didn't see the excitement at $99 - $149

You are asking the same question that every surplus collector has asked for a century.   Whats up with the outrageous SKS prices?   What's up with the outrageous Mauser prices?

"I remember when they were 25 bucks each in a bucket at the hardware store."

Importers have historically flooded the market with various milsurp rifles, selling them at near giveaway prices. The supply dries up, and then everyone wishes they'd have bought one. Up goes the price.

I never understood why they didn't drip these things on the market little by little, pricing them much higher.

Stack em deep while they are cheap. Some folks never get this.

Lots of reasons.  Warehousing and storage and other forms of overhead, the possibilities of laws/customs regulations changing, economy of scale, all factors which will provide impetus for importers to move lots of guns in the shortest amount of time.  It's basically the model the whole industry was built on, from Bannerman's through Sam Cummings to Classic/SOG/AIM today ...
