Beretta PX-4 Storm?

Recommended Posts

Anyone own one and care to share their thoughts or comparisons with other pistols? I have been seeing reports that they will be making a .45acp version available soon, and after handling some of the current models, I might eventually give one a serious look.

I'm most interested in how they hold up after significant use... Any problems?

We've had a couple come through the store, and I've shot the 9mm version. It pretty much handles like a polymer-framed 92FS. Its biggest drawback in my opinion is it's about 9 feet wide. For the life of me I can't figure out Beretta's obsession with wide pistols. Even the little pocket guns are wider than they need to be. Maybe the Italians want everybody to know that they have big hands... :D

As to durablility, Berettas in general have a stellar reputation. A large percentage of the US military's M9s are WAY past their planned life expectancy and still throwing lead downrange. (The M9 I was issued in Bosnia definitely had gray hair and dentures ). Beretta also has an excellent rep for customer service, and standing behind products long after the expressed warranty has elapsed. I think the .45 PX4 will be a fine gun, just wide. I do like the new Smith M&P .45 way better though...:D

I would be considering a .45 M&P, but for the fact that I actually don't care for the grip on the M&P line as much as I keep trying to convince myself to... So far, the only polymer pistols which I can honestly say feel 100% 'right' in my hand are:

Springfield XD

H&K P2000

Walther P99 (S&W SW99)

The XD and SW99 are the only 2 available in .45acp

The XD and P2000 are the only 2 available in .357sig

The only one of those which I would ever consider replacing my P239 with is the P2000,... When I do get the P2000, I will no longer want/need 2 different pistols for OC and CC, so I know that I'll be tempted to pursue acquiring a more full-size 'fun' pistol... hence the interest in the PX4. They are supposed to be very soft shooters.

Did you try all the different grip inserts with the M&P??

I feel like the M&P fits my hand better than the XDs did, but that's more subjected to personal prefrence. The M&Ps are less blocky and more streamlined than the XDs as well. From what you've listed, you can't go wrong. The XD, P2000, and PX4 are all good guns. The only trouble that I see with getting a PX4 might be holster selection.

On a side note, I put the factory plastic grips on my 226 and love them. The factory wood grips are a lot wider than the plastic ones and it made it fit my hand a lot better. It was comfortable with the wood on it, but with the plastic, it just feels right. I won't have to worry about scratching up the plastic ones either as they aren't $100 a set to replace.

My Beretta 92SB goes back to about 1984 or so and has served me well. Right now I'm still using it as a field pistol. I have no idea how many rounds have gone through it. A bunch.

I agree about Beretta's obsession with wide guns. Replacing the grips on the 92 helped but that isn't an option with the polymers.

Yeah, I've tried all the grip inserts... the smallest ones felt the best. Don't get me wrong, the M&P has one of the best grips on the market, for a poly handgun, and they point very well.

Much better than a Block, either way...

Something just isn't quite right though. Not that they feel bad, just a bit unnatural... I can't quite put my finger on it.

Molon, you might want to check out the new HK45 when it is released. Talk on the HK board is the grip on the P2000, the new P30, and the HK45 all have the same grip angle and feel. I am planning on getting the HK45 after it is released. Word is, it will be priced less than the Px4 and the new Sig in 45.

Edit: BTW, if you are interested in the Px4 45 because of the rotating barrel, you might want to check out a used Beretta Cougar 8045. Pretty much the same as the Px4 but the Cougar is Italian steel, not polymer. Just a thought.

I just read somewhere that Beretta has a "C" version of the PX4 trigger system (which stands for 'Constant Action'), it is described as a lighter, pre-cocked DAO system... different than the DAO "D" model. Perhaps an answer to LEM and DAK?

This certainly increases my interest...

I've read several contradictory statements regarding when, and even IF, the HK45 is going to be released. The HK45C looks like a sharp little weapon and I'd be interested in one of them if they ever become a reality.

Here's a little HK45 gun porn to get the blood flowing to the lower extremities...

I couldn't in good conscience carry a weapon that looked like it was modeled after something Buck Rogers used or Batman fired grappling hooks with.
