Need help id'ing this bird. Google isn't my friend in this search.

Medium size as predators go

Dirty white breast (solid not salt and pepper)

solid black head

solid charcoal body

tail is black and charcoal stripes

Currently refurbishing last years nest which oversees a couple of nice acres of wetland/lowland that provides habitat for deer raccoons and reportedly a coyote or two

Sounds like a Peregrine

Sounding good. The coloration is very similar to this. Breast is solid dirty white like this one's throat, not salt and pepper, and body head is a very smooth distinct (solid) color. Tail is very pronounced stripes. Wish I had a zoom lens. Maybe a spotting scope will get me closer.Hayabusa

Could be a Mileomo. This bird digs a hole in the ground to stick it's head in before it passes gas because you can hear it for a mileomo. My dad used to have me listen for them if we were out hunting, funny he always knew when one was digging a hole.

I don't think I've ever heard that before. Without checking a map of their range, I do think we have them up here in MN. Sounds pretty familiar, at least...

I'm sure you've heard one, you just didn't think it was a bird.

Come think of it, I've always just chalked it to someone stepping on a duck.

Part of the reason I always giggle in a Chinese restaurant when I see pressed duck on the menu...

Humor aside, pic doesn't look like Coopers Hawk. We have had a lot of Coopers around us since we moved here 13 years ago. Love watching them soar, hunt, and just perch in the trees.

The pic is of a peregrine to note similarities. peejman's understanding of the written description about nails it with his suggestion that it is a coopers hawk. The similar sharp shinned hawk pic'd below is a close as I can get to an id.

Okay, I may be the only one that had this thought, but when I saw the thread title, I thought the discussion was going to be on identifying different model years of the Ford Raptor...

My intent was just to reply name her Blue, regardless of the conversation.

We don't have those around home, but the barking spiders are particularly bad this year.
