Night Sight Search... Hours Wasted

So I've recently decided that I want some night sights. I'm considering putting them on both my G26 and XDm. Do any of you have suggestions? I've been researching WAY too much, and here's my thoughts so far...

I'm probably leaning towards regular tritium sights, none of the fancy TFO stuff or anything. I kind of like the AmeriGlo smooth slope ones for the Glock, mostly because it has the set screw for the rear sight. From the reading I've done, you either should get a rear-sight tool (too expensive) or take it to a gunsmith. I'm a DIY-er and would really rather accomplish it myself. Unless someone knows a good smith that would do the work for a good price. Anyway, I'm rambling. The set screw would mean I could shape the dovetail thing a bit and then tighten it with the set screw.

Do other brands use the set screw method on the back sight, or do you just have to jam them in there? Does anyone have any ideas for me or personal experience? Or, better yet, a rear sight tool that you'd rent to me?

Yeah, but I'd read stuff by several people who suggested filing the bottom of the dovetail VERY slightly so that drifting it in isn't such a horrible battle. I think XS recommends this method.

Does hero gear have a smith who does this? I've been looking for the perfect excuse to drive down there and be tempted by everything. I couldn't bring my wife though. She makes me buy more than I should...

Set screw or not, you will need to drift the rear sight in.

+1

I wouldn't let the presence of a set screw determine what sights I installed.

Traditional nightsights?

3 Dot= Trijicon, Ameriglo, Meprolite, Heinie, Warren. I like Meps for the easier to see dots.

2 Dot= Heinie, Warren Tactical. I like Warrens (not the Warren/Sevigny) because of the rear sight width.

All of the above are good products. It just boils down to personal taste (I prefer XS Sights).

BTW, I don't like smooth slope sights...they make one handed loading and malfunction clearance more difficult.

When I saw the title of this tread.. my first thought was that someone had lost their night sight and couldn't find it!

Put the classic Ameriglos w/set screws on my G20 and G23. No filing, no tool to drift needed, easy. The 'blade' slides easily into the dovetail, the 'body' of the rear sight is then secured to the 'blade' with the two set screws. Very simple. Makes for very easy windage adjustment also. Hundreds of rounds through them and no loosening, no problems at all. I'm sold on them. Green front with yellow rear on the G23. Green/green on the G20. Next up will be my 2nd gen G32.

I prefer Meprolights. The painted dot surrounding the tritium vial is larger than other brands I've had. Unless you have a sight pusher, I'd pay a smith to install them. If they screw it up, they get to buy new sights - if you screw it up...

I prefer the larger dots on the Meprolight on my sub compact glocks and Trijicon on my compact and full size glocks. Like everybody else says it's just preference. But if it's a matter of getting them installed that is swaying your decision I have a Glock sight tool made by trijicon that works on all models of glocks. I'm in Smyrna and would be glad to put them on for you at no cost.
