Dwrd and I took advantage of the weather and rode up the Guns and Leather yesterday.

After he took the wrong exit to get on 41 (come on... who wants to get off at Trinity Lane?) we finally got there.

Mulling over the idea that i'd probably find and deal and i shouldnt spend money....sure enough. I found a deal. Passed on a deal for a USP when Andrew behind the counter pulls out a P30. /sigh

I was sold. I'm the biggest sucker for HK.

Nice looking pistol.

I will ask a dumb question. In the first pic there is a long key. Where does it go and what purpose does it serve?

My USP 9 is my favorite handgun.

Inside the mag well there is a little slot for it.

It locks up the action when 'not in use.'

Its a safety feature.

Nice!

I eyeballed that thing when I was there last week, but went w/ a USP9c instead. I'm fast becoming a sucker to HK too.

Does it have a removable backstrap or something? Is that what those extra pieces are?

Yes. The backstrap and the side panels swap out.

I love the looks of the grip! Did I read somewhere that H&K uses that same kind of rifling technique that Glock does? Meaning cast bullets are a bad deal?

That would really suck, I could see myself buying one of those.

Yep, polygonal rifling. I don't understand exactly why that makes cast bullets a no-no, but I know squat about reloading and ballistics...

I don't get it either, but I'm addicted to casting my own, and I know they don't jive together, so i just accept it and be wary.

Cast bullets tend to be soft and swadge their way down the bore without engaging the so called rifling on polygonal barrels. This leads to excessive lead build up and higher pressures, poor accuracy is to be expected also.

I've shot lead in a poly barrel before and it was really really leaded... like less than 30 rounds.

Just not worth the cost savings IMO.

Oh, thanks.

Does it really have any benefits or is it someone's way of re-inventing the wheel?

Supposedly better accuracy and longer barrel life... those crazy krauts. :D

IMI does it too with the Desert Eagle unless I'm mistaken. It's what has kept me away from a .44 DE. Gas operated AND poly barrel, bad juju for a caster like me.:)

Yeah, that's why I machine all of my bullets out of titanium bar stock with my 6-axis CNC... :D

Yeah, I think I remember reading that Magnum Research used it too... also Kahr if I'm not mistaken.

Poly barrels have been around for awhile.

Its became kind of unpopular about the time when black powder and cordite became the standard. The soft barrels coupled with the shallow rifling were too much. Supposedly the advantage is accuracy because there is less drag produced on the bullet. Its also said to reduce build up of gunk in the barrel. (that is unless you want to shoot cast) .

HK was the first to incorporate it into modern guns

Yes, Kahr does it too.

And dont forget Noveske barrels.
