Take off the slide and try it then and see what happens. Also you can take one or two rounds out and see if it locks in then.

Is it a new pistol? If so may need some break in.

Hope you get it working.

Will the mag lock in when its empty? Will a loaded mag lock in with the slide locked open? If either of these is the case, its probably just new gun stiffness and will work itself out.

Most likely culprit will be the magazine. if the spring is stiff or the rounds are dragging, it may not want to compress quite far enough for the mag to lock into its catch when the slide is closed.

Try downloading your mag by -2 or -3 rounds to see what happens.

Most likely a bad magazine. However, it could be a problem with the magazine catch. Being brand new, I'd take it back to the store and let them sort it out.

What brand pistol is it and is the magazine factory original?  Did it come with more than one magazine?

Post some pics. of the gun with the mag. inserted so we can see what going on. Could be the brand of Mag. or as other's have said it could be the Mag. Release Button, or the Mag Catch.

I am not a gunsmith (for sure), maybe take MAG out and shine a light up the grip to see if you can see the MAG catch as you press and release MAG button while looking.

Strange a new gun would do that, but stuff happens.

Just don't sound right.  Empty mag will not seat/lock in a 1911 with slide open.  Take new gun back to store and let them work it out.

Was thinking the same thing all along. No real info ever given, even with repeated questions.

What kind of firearms person would buy a 1911 and not identify it when talking about it?

Very strange post. And a first-timer from Florida. All combine to be very, very strange.

Or possibly someone very new, somewhat embarrassed, and bought a 1911 as their first handgun

Patience Gentlemen.  He may have gotten all the info he needed.  After all, it'd s 1911.  They are pretty much all built the same, just with different tolerances.
