Do I need a thumb brake?

So I went ahead & placed a order for a thunderbird holster from kdholsters. One of the options was to add a thumbbreak. I declined it at the time but now it has me thinking do I need it? Lmk your opions and the reason for or against. Thanks.

A properly fitted holster shouldn't need a thumb-break to retain the firearm. Personally, I think they add an additional motion into the act of drawing that is not needed, especially in a self-defense situation when adrenalin is pumping, etc. OMO, YMMV....

Certainly, using that Thunderbird IWB, your belt line will snug it in there well, no way its coming out of there even upside down.

If you use it OWB, it should be plenty snug enough unless you turn cartwheels, and probably not come out then either since the belt slots will pull it pretty close into your side providing extra friction.

Plus, that's a quality boned holster, will be precise fit.

Very very few experienced daily carry folks use a thumbreak, for good reasons others have mentioned.

Personally, I like a holster with something more than friction for retention.

Some gunfights start out as an empty-hand / grappling situation...it would suck to be rolling around with someone and lose your heater.

Having said that, my "something more" is not a traditional thumbreak.

I honestly plan on using it as a owb. I already have a mtac for iwb. I just really like the look of the Thunderbird. I may even change the holster all together to a strictly owb model. I just had to come up with something to get myself in line since he has such a long waiting time. This will be my first custom leather holster.

Government test show that if your thumb is faster than 18 mph it needs brakes. If it weights more than 2.6000 lbs It will require air brakes. If it is less then hydraulic brakes will be fine. Hope this will help:D

You might be able to get by without a thumbreak on an IWB, but I wouldn’t have an OWB holster that doesn’t have one.

You have to have a way of securing your weapon. I have never had it happen to me, but I have watched as weapons went sliding across the pavement. Also, you can be disarmed in a heartbeat without a secure holster.

I would add it.
