Shockwave brace

Recommended Posts

Its been a while since I built a new rifle and I decided to go ahead and build a pistol. I am under the impression the atf has said that "placing the sig brace against your shoulder does NOT turn the pistol into an SBR", and then I looked up the shockwave brace and things look murky.

So, does anyone know for a fact if the shockwave brace gets the same treatment as the sig brace? PSA has bunch of kits with the shockwave on sale and I would like to snatch one so I can start the new year building something other than legos.

This is not exactly what you asked, but let me throw it out there as an alternative:

I've built three AR pistols.  All of them just use a pistol buffer tube with no brace.  They work perfectly well.  The braces offer no benefit that I can identify, and they pose potential problems for owners because their legality relies on shifting and nebulous statements from a federal agency with a disgraceful history of trying to jam up honest citizens.   Plus there's the additional risk of having uninformed law enforcement officers mistakenly perceive the weapon as an illegal SBR.

I wonder how many bump stock owners would have said last month, "My bump stock is legal; I have a copy of the letter here to prove it."

In my opinion, which is worth precisely what you paid for it, a cost-benefit analysis doesn't favor the AR pistol brace.

Cheers,

Whisper

JMO. Some favor the Shockwave, others the Sig brace. As Whisper says, either might be seen as a Stock and cause issues with the uninformed. Either can be "shouldered" or held against or in crook of elbow.

Personally, I find the Sig awful when used as intended. Hate the wrap around the forearm. That being said, I do have them on 2 pistols. Why? I just don't like the bare buffer tube.

Nuts? Probably. Just me.

Off on a tangent...I really like the Tailhook Brace by GearHead Works, and almost any MFT stock on a rifle. Enough to pay to use it on a pistol as an SBR? No.

Thanks for the input, it was just cheaper to get a the shockwave kit than the sig brace. I honestly wanted to see if I would like a 10.5 ar and if yes, Ill built another one and get the tax stamp. Magpul spoiled me with the ACS_L stock and I want to put it in almost very thing now. I will post photos of the new build one it is done. So, two to three weeks from now pending shipping from PSA.

The good news is that with E-File form 1s getting turned around in a matter of weeks the wait isn't so bad for an SBR.  Doesn't solve the problem of paying $200 for an official stock on your 10.5" pistol, nor does it make it any easier to carry what was a pistol across state lines.

Its mostly correct.  Shouldering a brace does not change the classification of the firearm.  However, installing a brace with the intent to shoulder it, is still illegal.  Its difficult to charge someone with it since intent is difficult to prove, but much easier when people post about it on the internet.

I found the shockwave brace to be more of a hindrance and it didnt match the magpul furniture, so I threw a plain pistol buffer tube and called it a day.

Good call.

I also ordered enough parts to build another pistol and they are all here. Had a un complete side charging upper. Now I am now on the hunt for a non anderson lower. The hunt is not going well. I should have bought more than two lower a year and a half ago. Everyone charges 50 bucks for a transfer fee so there is almost zero savings ordering online.

Yep that has been my issue, though locally here J think I can still transfer for $25 a couple places.

You just not like Anderson?

Thinking back, I should have bought 10 space force lowers. Those look amazing.

Lol. None of my bulit lowers look the same. One AR I actually bought everything off eBay except the lower as an experiment. That one is a basic Anderson lower and built like frankinstein's monster.

As long as it wasnt trapped in a tower by angry villagers, you should be good. I been using andersons for years. Bought spikes to try something different. I still dont know what the difference is besides a name and a logo. They both function the same.

My only gripe with anderson is I wish they were darker. The black never matches the upper.

All of my lowers say TN on them except my one Ruger lower.   I buy from TN manufacturers just so they say TN.

Thats cool actually, where do you get them at?

Most of them are CMT Tactical.  I order them online.   They are a bit expensive since they are billet lowers but they are worth it to me.

I have some from Patriot Defense Armory which I think is now out of business.

And if I need more, I'll be getting them from Wolf River Precision.
