Earthquake

I heard a thump (which woke me up) then a rumble, and the house shook gently for 15-20 seconds. I could hear stuff on the shelves wobbling. I only heard the 2nd one, don't recall feeling any motion. Thankfully I went back to sleep.

We live beside Ft. Campbell so we can never tell if it's earthquake or training. Tennessee was hit pretty hard back in the 1800's by one of the worst quakes in the US . People in Washington DC felt it I have read. I sure hate to think that thing will be active again.

And that Fault Line is still there so it can still happen at any time but research had shown the fault line has been quiet since the early 1900's

I was awake and at my desk when it  rumbled through.  I could certainly feel it and watched a calendar sway back and forth for a good bit.

I've lived here 12 years and felt tremors before but this was certainly the strongest.

I was just watching the news and they said ya'll had 2 quakes. 1st one was 3.3 which can be scary but I imagine the one most of ya'll felt was the 8.8 according the earthquake center.

I think you made a typo there Doug. If it was an 8.8 we'd be dealing with a catastrophic event. The first event was a 4.4 followed by a 3.3

Maybe it has something to do with all those new folks from out of state moving into the eastern end of the state. The state is starting to tip over like Guam :D

I'm with Erik I slept right through it. My wife said something woke her up about that time but wasn't sure what it was. She didn't feel anything and said she went right back to sleep.

The New Madrid Fault is the one I’ve heard about all my life. They say West Tennessee, Kentucky and Southern Illinois will take a big hit.

Yep.  There’s a reason the University of Memphis has a pretty significant earthquake research center.

It was actually a series of 4 main quakes, with hundreds of aftershocks.  The "big 4" occurred between December 16, 1811 and February 7, 1812, with aftershocks large enough to be felt until 1817.  Numerous events have occurred since, with a few in the @6 range on the Richter Scale.  Since Memphis State installed monitoring equipment in 1974, over 4k quakes have been recorded.  The New Madrid Fault Zone remains as one of the most active in North America, with potential for massive destruction. I live in the area, which gets quakes that can be felt every couple of years, about once per decade one causes some sort of damage, albeit not very widespread or serious ...
