Does TN have special taxes on Ammo?

It’s a dime a box. Doesn’t matter if it’s a 20 rd box or a case. It’s a dime that goes to the TWRA. It’s one of the least objectionable taxes in my book. If you stick around you’ll learn how big of a statement that is coming from me.

Reading elsewhere I saw a statement that Tennessee has a special tax on ammo. Since we will soon be moving to Tennessee, should I be bringing a truckload of ammo with me?

If you bring a literal truck load it may be a wash once you calculate in the expense and trouble of hauling it here.  Unlike Illinois you do not have to be a resident or live in a state that borders it to purchase ammo.

Yes, but it isn’t enough to worry about and you don’t need a FOID card to buy it. Like anywhere else its higher in the stores than ordered online. Most places that won’t ship to Illinois will ship to Tennessee.

I do most of my shooting in Illinois, but buy my ammo here. Even though I’m not required to have a FOID card in Illinois to purchase ammo, most places won’t sell without one because they don’t know the laws.

The new Governor to be (Illinois) is talking about a tax of $1.00 per round. There is already a new shell or mark up Bill in the Illinois Senate taxing ammo at 1 cent a round sitting there for all the changes I expect they will make before letting it out of final committee. Given the blue sweep in Illinois and given our Speaker of the House and his super majority, whatever they want will pass.

I have been kicking around buying a little ammo but I would have to buy another ammo safe because I cannot get another 50 round box of 22lr's in my other one much less any 380's. I might get tempted if I find a sale on either 22lr's or 380's but it would really have to be on sale...............:panic:

The tax is the little stamp pasted on the box. When I sold off my late friends collection he had a ton of loose boxes from case purchases. The case had a stamp, but the individual boxes did not. Since the cases had been opened and part had been used, I would be selling individual boxes. A dealer friend informed me that if I took these to a gun show to sell, all it would take is one sharp eyed LEO to get the whole mess confiscated. All it took was a simple call to TWRA, my credit card and the tax stamps arrived in the mail a few days later. A sheet of 100 stamps for $10.  No problem.

My mistake, the sheets are 100 stamps.

Interesting -- didn't even know was taxed extra, I thought just TN sales tax.

Money well spent for TW -- but wish they would add more shooting ranges.

If a dime is that big a deal to you, just order it on the internet.

Since the money is earmarked for TWRA projects, I do not mind it. They have fish hatcheries scattered about for restocking Tennessee waters, and do myriad other things with the money. We wouldn't have wild turkeys here if it were not for this. It is money well spent for the sportsman.

Heck, the TWRA often solicits our opinions on things such as regulations, bag limits, etc. I wish all of government was run like the TWRA.
