Hey guys I have a decision to make I have been looking to get a new pistol and I can not decide between the XDM and the Glock. I am most likely going to get the 40 cal but I have not ruled out the 9mm completely. Any thoughts?

Here comes the 'hornets nest'! Strong opinions both ways. I have never owned a Glock, but have two XD's. I can't imagine liking anything else any more than I do them. I have owned Rugers, CZ's and Smiths. I keep coming back to the XD. Handle both, shoot both if possible, and choose which one for all reasons considered just feels 'right.'

Good luck!

What are you buying the gun for? Competition? Fun at the range? Carry?

My 9mm Glocks are the G17 (purchased yesterday), G19, G26, and a G34. I have not given the G17 a try, but the others have proven to be flawless performers.

I do not own an XDM, but have handled it. I do possess an XD 45, and it is an excellent performer. The XDM 9mm is tempting because of the 19 round magazine capacity. My only concern is that finding additional 19 round mags is not that easy, and few stores carry them. The XDm is a relatively new model, and has only recently appeared, but the Glock design has withstood the test of time.

Glock magazines are still obtainable, and are quite cheap. All Glock parts are relatively cheap & pretty easy to obtain over the internet, but most Springfield parts are factory only items.

As far as caliber is concerned, .40 S&W may have a little more oomph, but the real deciding factor in stopping a fight is shot placement. 9mm ammo is cheaper than .40, has less recoil - better follow up shot ability, and you will be able to shoot more rounds for the same amount of money. There are many modern self defence rounds available for the 9mm, and they are very capable performers.

Obviously, the final decision is up to you, but right now, a 9mm Glock makes good sense to me. I would try them both, then pick the one that worked best for me.

I have fired just about every Glock made over the years and I love the way the feel in my hand and the way that the fire. But the XDM feels just as good if not better in my hand. I have not had the chance to fire the XDM yet , but from what I heard it very accurate out of the box.

As for what I am buying it for: I have never shot in a competition but I think that is something that I would enjoy and I know both perform well in that arena. I will mostly likely use it as a carry gun at least for a while. I have a hard time not holstering up the newest gun.

I have shot several Glocks and own an XD40. Between the two I prefer the XD. Can't go wrong with either though. Since this is the style you are going for, I have to mention the M&P for your consideration.

I have shot the XD 40 and I own Glocks, I have never owned an XD as I just don't like the way they fit my hand. Not saying they are not a good gun to own, but I would prefer a Glock. The key to picking out a new toy, is pick it up, rub it, smell it, aim it (in a safe direction of course) see how it fits you. Sometimes you can get that warm fuzzy as soon as you pick it up. That is exactly what happened the first time I picked up a Ruger SR9. Hey give it a try too. Above all, find someone that has both and shoot them. See how they react in your hands.

XDM 9mm here. And I was lucky enough to get it when they were running the Gear Up promotion, so 2 free mags are on their way. Like others have said, shoot/handle both, then make up your mind.

My wife got the SR9 for me for Christmas and i love it.

I could never see any sense in the grip safety on the XD. To me, it is just one more thing to go wrong at the wrong time. I vote for GLOCK simplicity.

I admit, unlike with a Glock, you really do have to over-achieve to shoot yer ass off while reholstering with an XD.

The likelihood of the grip safety failing is about the same as that happening to a 1911, ie nil.

i have a xdM in 40. it's a great gun, but unfortunately IDPA thinks it is a DA/SA gun...can't figure that one out and classifies it differently. I am probably gonna pick up a G34 for competitions since it has a longer slide and 9mm is less snappy and cheaper, but I have been nothing but happy with the spinger. My only improvement would be better factory sights if it's gonna be a match grade gun

Check out the m&p line from Smith and Wesson, They are made in the USA.

And we need to keep the money over here .

Funny, just had this same comparison conversation (offline) for my own upcoming purchase. I'm a 9mm fan. Going with the lighter G26 and all the Federal Hyda-shocks I can find. Glock dependability!

Shoot both first if you get the chance. Hold each in your hand, close your eyes, and point at a target. Which one lines up more naturally? This is not as big an obstacle to overcome as many would have you think (whether the Glock points high or the XDM points low). Compare the triggers by dry-firing. The XDM has a slightly lighter pull, but a longer reset. The Glock has the benefit of a wider choice of accessories. Magazines are probably cheaper and more available (althought the current political landscape may change that for all guns). The only gun that rivals a Glock for the wide range of choices of holsters and sights is a 1911.

I'm a huge Glock fan, but you can't go wrong with either one. Be warned, though--don't buy into all the Glock-will-shoot-your-ass BS. People shoot themselves in the ass because they pulled the trigger before their gun ever cleared their holster. A grip safety would do them no good. A little training and repetition would.

I would buy what fits your hand best. The glocks do not fit my hand good, and I don't shoot them accurately. Goto your local shop and 'try on' a few of each and you'll know what fits/feels good and can judge from there.

You can't go wrong with either xd or glock, but buying what feels better will no doubt make you shoot better.

I have a Glock 27 in 40 cal. and love it I have also shot the M&P 40 compact and loved it. I have only held the XD myself even the compact XD's seem to have to long a grip so would be harder to keep from sticking out and printing. I agree with another on up go to a range/ dealer and shoot both which feels better to you and speaks to you or shoot more than the two you will know what is right and the guys at the dealers will always be glad to help. I know some will say what ever for a sell but most will want to share there knowledge and get you set right. Good luck;)

I have shot virtually all of the modern semi auto's on the market. I really like the XD's, but I don't own one. I do however own four Glocks and carry one of them evry day of my life.

I agree with the other posts, go to your local rang or gun shop, handle each model, and others as well, and see which one you like best. They will all shoot about the same and they will all perform about the same. It boils down to personal preference.

And a BIG +1 to the fact that people shoot themselves in the ass by not keeping their booger hooks of the bang lever, not because a gun has a "design flaw". That is what always drove me nuts about Marswolf, he advocated keeping your finger ON the trigger......WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Train yourself to keep your finger straight and off the trigger and you won't hav any problem with ANY weapon.

Now that is the best advice!
