Shotguns with slugs during Muzzleloader Season?

Talking to my Dad today and he said that shotguns firing slugs are legal during TN muzzleoader season now. I can't find this on TWRA's site. Anybody heard of this?

I have not heard anything about this. I will do some checking tomorrow and see if I can find anything.

I have a good buddy that's a game warden and he said "absolutely not".

Thanks. I am wearing the internet out on it. I bought a used muzzleloader, but without experience a 12ga would make me more comfortable this season. Dad really wants me to come with him to Columbia for a hunt.

They’ve been talking about it and allowing large bore single shots.  License holders got a survey earlier this year. 

I have not seen a change - and wouldn’t expect one this season.

I thought this was the answer. I know it has been considered.  I doubt it will pass but it would nice if it did. I believe Mississippi allows single shot rifles during primitive season.

Mississippi allows single shot rifles, but of a certain caliber like .35 Whelen or larger.

Looks like I just need to find somewhere to practice with that in-line muzzleloader I picked up. 

Just mainly trying to work in some more time with Dad. I am afraid we don't have him for many more years.

I've never shot a deer with a shotgun but I have with my inline several times. It's probably my favorite. I killed a 7 point at 92 yards a few years ago with it. I think you'll like it once you try it. As far as using a shotgun during the muzzleloader season, there are some draw hunts like Oakridge that you could use either  if I remember correctly.

Honestly, I'd rather use my muzzleloader.

If I had a choice mine would be a Muzzle Loader also. Just more of a challenge and much more rewarding to take a nice buck with a smoke stick over a shotgun unless you just have to have freezer meat.

My only issue is lack of experience with it. I had really picked one up as a 'just-in-case' when someone had one for sale cheap. 

I have to find somewhere I can go practice with it. Both basic function and load/bullet type.

Loading is the biggest challenge you will run into. You already have an advantage over what I use to use. I used the Original Charlie Hawkins and rain was my only issue that the inlines have practically eliminated but stil not completely.

I remember when I used to take my bow instead of the ML in the rain before I added an inline to the herd. Some of my most memorable hunts...

I haven't had any issues since I switched to #209 primers which I had to buy the conversation kit for. I love the punch that it has on deer but I would still like to try a shotgun with slugs. I even bought a fully rifled barrel and never used it.

I would see single shot shotguns and the other firearms mentioned being added to black powder/muzzle loading season.

I think it would be good for hunters.

I don’t know about others’ experiences, but every deer that I’ve ever shot or seen shot with a slug had a lot of blood trauma.  

I don’t know if it’s just that there’s so much mass, or they’re slow moving, or some combination of both.  But, there was so much damage to the meat that I don’t think it’s worth it.
