Coleman lanterns and stoves

Recommended Posts

As some of you know, I have a passing interest in older Coleman (and other brand) gas / kerosene / alcohol appliances.

I have a small collection (300+) of lanterns, lamps, stoves and heaters. I also have a fair amount of NOS parts, manuals, and so forth.

Just throwing this out in case anyone is interested in getting one, or restoring/repairing their own.

I have several myself.

You would probably be interested to see the lantern my wife came home with a month or so ago. She went to a rummage sale, and bought one NEW in the box for $3. It had never been opened until I got it. From the looks of the box, I would say 70's era. Is there a way to date them???

Colemans are easily dated. For a lantern, look on the bottom of the fount. You'll find 2 numbers stamped into it. Month and year. Decade is determined by the model number. Stoves (except for the 'pocket' single burners) are dated on the fuel tank.

I only have a handfull of post-1970 lanterns. Most are pre-1950. Quality materials, construction and design.

Odds are very good you'll need a new fuel-cap gasket. If the pump cup is rubber/plastic, it may need replacement. If leather, use neatsfoot oil. I have all the stuff you'd need.

Great info! I have a stove or two that need some attention.

I believe I have one of those military-looking ones that I probably need to clean its innards out for ready to use.

If you have those type of manuals I would be greatly interested.

I will pull mine out in the next day or two and see just what I have.

On that same note, didn't we have to buy Coleman fuel just because of the lead in the fuels years ago?

I would think that you should now be able to use regular gas at the pumps for the Coleman stuff unless ethanol does something bad.

I've been interested in buying a lantern myself, but haven't yet because the GOOD new ones (I don't particularly like the "sit on top of a propane tank" ones) are a bit expensive. I'm going to keep my eye out for yard sales and at the pawn shops for one, though.

I have parts and depot level manuals for the M-1950 squad stove (single burner), the single burner WWII squad stove, and the dual burner vehicle stove. If you can post a photo, I can tell you what you have. If it looks a bit like a green lunar lander, that's the M-1950. Great stove. 5500 BTU, and will burn a couple hours on about 5 ounces of gas.

Years ago, the only reason to buy Coleman fuel was because of the lead. These days, no lead - but lots of other nasty chemicals added to gasoline. You can use it, and I'd recommend it for lanterns, but don't think I would cook with it if I had a choice. It will clog the generators slightly faster than white gas, but you'll get at least 200 hours on a lantern generator. At an average price of 6 bucks for generators, you'll pay for it with the first 2 gallons.

Okay, The model is 220J195

On the bottom of the fuel tank it has a 7 and a 78.

I am all but certain it was never opened until I got it. The box was even in great shape, looks like I just got it off the shelf. I took it out and the mantles and instructions are still inside the globe. Any value? Other than having a brand new lantern, duh:D

"Small."

I've got an old 413f499 that's new in the box with all the paperwork. Picked it up off eBay for $31 shipped. Even still had the old gum-and-cord tape holding the windscreen down.

Do you know anything about the miners headlamps? I have my great grandfathers but don't even know how to work it.

If power went out in Kingsport, Mark could light the place brighter than New York on New Year's Eve. Mark's mancave is basically several acres. I'm jealous.

No problem, CAS. Remind me when you come up. Cost you about 10 bucks, and we will rebuild one together so that you know how to maintain it.

The model is 220J195. On the bottom of the fuel tank it has a 7 and a 78

The J is a 'modern' coleman. No particular value, but hey, a new lantern for 3 bucks? The glass alone is worth twice that.

DYK? The mantles are radioactive?? We use them to practice decon.

Older 'Silklite' branded mantles, and new off-brand mantles (most are made in the Philipines) are slightly radioactive, as they are soaked in a thorium salts solution. New production Coleman brand mantles are not.

I've got an old 413f499

The F series are great lanterns! Only real difference between them and the older D's (last of the old-style) is that the fount (fuel tank) is steel instead of brass. D model and previous had either nickel plated or painted brass founts.

Do you know anything about the miners headlamps?

IF it is in good shape, you add powdered carbide and water. The resulting gas is flammable - the lamp probably has a flint sparker to light it. If there is any rust, or gaskets are shot, I recommend you leave it on the shelf. If you want more detailed info, take a photo of it and PM me...

Dang Mark, you're working on adopting me

I'll remember to bring some extra money.

Sue lost power for several days a few winters ago, and never missed a lick. Heat, light, coffee and cooking...

Mancave? hehehehe.... Thanks, SunTzu.

Hi Chris

Sorry for the delayed reply. I just reported back to work, so it would be several months before I could send you the stuff - but here is the good news...

Unless someone has already gotten at it, there is a full set of spares for your stove inside the shaft of the pump. Just unscrew the stamped metal pump handle. You may have to make or buy a new o ring, but everything else should be there.

Coleman still sells the 220 series generator, it is available on their website

I have the manual for your stove if you want it (send me a pm) but you probably don't need it, they are pretty simple.

Regarding a rebuild kit for the lantern, everything can be cleaned and re used except the generator. Google double mantle lantern ffr for rebuild procedure.
