I have been in TNSG for 18 years. I currently am serving as Commandant of the TNSG Academy (Online School). I'll see you at Foster Avenue as I am on the General Staff.

Thanks for your service and dedication Colonel.

Perhaps you can post more info about the TNSG here, as there have been several interested members here.

Any words of wisdom, insight, advice on joining and serving in the State Guard?

What sort of jobs/ranks are available?

What sort of qualifications or prerequisites are you looking for?

What kinds of missions/duties can one expect?

Is there a formula used to calculate your rank/position based on prior Military service and rank?

And finally; is there any discussion about moving away from BDUs and goofy patches, and transitioning into something that better matches the current Army/NG uniform?

What sort of jobs/ranks are available?

All types. We are basically a Military Police/Light Infantry force but without firearms. In event of actual invasion we are support primarily not the armed "spearhead"

What sort of qualifications or prerequisites are you looking for?

Just prior service, any service. We will train you in your new position.

What kinds of missions/duties can one expect?

Light Security, Traffic control and Emergency assistance. We provide free security service for the RAM (Rural Area Medical assistance) and for numerous civilian community groups. During a recent Joint Operation we provided security elements for the Tennessee Army National Guard ( most of their assets are in IRAQ.) We also provide extensive Legal, Medical and Chaplain assistance, including to the 101st AB at Fort Campbell.

Is there a formula used to calculate your rank/position based on prior Military service and rank?

One rank higher than your prior service rank. I retired a MGySgt (E9) from the USMC so I came in as a CSM. After getting my degree at TTU, I was commissioned. Unlike most State Guards, the TNSG does have Warrant Officers.

And finally; is there any discussion about moving away from BDUs and goofy patches, and transitioning into something that better matches the current Army/NG uniform?

Current AG wishes for us to stay in a different uniform from NG. I think it is partly for the public to recognize the difference between the forces (State vs Federal) but I am not really sure. As long as he wants us to wear the Woodland BDU/TCU, we will. The woodland TCU is the same uniform as the ACU, just in a different color and pattern. As we are not going to be deployed outside of TN, and TN is woodland and not desert, our present uniform is probably more appropriate.

And let me add that COL Hofman has put together a tremendous online training academy for the TNSG - http://www.tnguardacademy.org/

Really wish that some of you prior service TGO members would seriously look into the TNSG

Welcome to the TNSG and just in time for Mays Annual Training at Catoossa.

Now IF we could only get some of our fellow prior service TGO members to join......:hat:

See you at drill. I float around HQ in the morning and I am usually at the Academy (Cherico Hall) in the afternoon.

Generally one Saturday a month and one weekend annual training event.

If you live in East TN, the 3rd Regiment and its Battalions are heavy involved in supporting Remote Area Mission (RAM) events so we sometimes have a Sat drill and a Fri evening -Sun afternoon RAM activity. Some members are there a few days others a few hrs but we somehow always have enough to properly support the event. We also support Homeless Veteran Stand Downs in Knoxville, Operation Reach in Roane County and other activities throughout our area of operation. I cannot speak for the other 3 Regiments and their subordinate Battalions nor HQ but can only assume that they are also quite active. The TNSG has helped the NG get ready for deployment, provided Katrina refugee support, Tornado support in Jackson, and the list goes on and on

Please contact a recruiter via this site http://www.tnsg.us/ for information

At this time of my life, I don't need anything else on my plate, need to back off some stuff. But in the future..you never know. The website is limited on information, looks like it is going in the right direction, but still needs work. I was an E5 in the TN National guard, Armor. I see there are no tanks in the TNSG!
