TV Show, Active Shooter-America Under Fire

My wife and I recently discovered this on Showtime. I turned on the first episode with a lot of skepticism and assumed there would be a lot of talk about gun control. That is not the case at all. It covers these instances about as fairly as they could. Only twice so far has it briefly been mentioned and we've watched nearly every episode.  One surgeon described the damage from an AR-15 round and questioned the legality and some detectives complained about 80% lowers being used in Santa Monica but that was it. They have many of the survivors on the show discussing what happened, how they survived, etc. They also had family members of some of the perpetrators which has been interesting. We rarely hear their story. The underlying theme has actually been mental health and or hate as in the case of Oak Creek WI and Charleston SC.

The biggest take-away for me so far is that nearly every single person interviewed experienced Normalcy Bias. At first, their brain would not comprehend that those were gun shots. That's a lesson that my wife and I have taken from this. The key to survival may be reacting quickly and not ignoring what's obvious.

I would encourage you all to try an episode if you have access. You may learn something.

I will have to check that out tonight.

I assume the problems are the same as always...

1. Interpretations of our laws and the Constitution usually do not allow action to be taken until a crime is committed.

2. As with any crime involving an armed perp the victims usually don’t have the ability to make the shooter unwilling or unable to fire his weapon.

I'm sorry, but I don't see that as a problem.

I watched all 8 episodes of this. They are very interesting and should especially be viewed by first responders and medical personnel. They show problems of preparedness for these events. Like the inability of Officers being able to communicate with responders from different agencies, and hospitals not being alerted to the amount of incoming and the inability to quickly put out a call for additional Doctors and Nurses.

These stories are told by the first responders, victims, victims’ families, and Police and Medical administrators.

There is very little anti-gun rhetoric; I don’t remember it being discussed much at all except by one victim’s Father in the Columbine episode.

A lot more is known now about some of these shootings than was known at the time. You come away understanding more about some of the problems other than some nut case decided to start killing people. Like with the Navy Yard shooting. Both the family and the contract employer knew the severe mental problems Aaron Alexis had. He had no business being in there; but no one addressed the issues.

Or the problem of getting the wounded to the hospital in the Aurora theater shooting. The shooter was in custody almost immediately upon arrival of the Police, but the ambulances couldn’t get to the back of the theater where the wounded were being brought. Cops started hauling victims out in their patrol cars to hospitals that weren’t informed of what they were facing.

These are well prepared documentaries; worth the watch.
